DRAINAGE & SETTLEMENT PATTERNS LESSON 7

Drainage Patterns 5 types of drainage patterns can be identified on a top-sheet 1.TRELLIS PATTERN / RECTANGULAR PATTERN 2. DENTRITIC PATTERN 3. PARALLEL PATTERN 4. RADIAL PATTERN & 5. DISAPPEARING PATTERN

TRELLIS PATTERN TRIBUTARIES ARE SEEN MEETING THE MAIN STREAM AT A RIGHT ANGLE. THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM THAT THUS DEVELOPS LOOKS SOMEWHAT RECTANGULAR.

THE MOST COMMON DRAINAGE PATTERN. DENDRITIC PATTERN THE MOST COMMON DRAINAGE PATTERN. TRIBUTARIES COME FROM ALL DIRECTIONS TO MEET THE MAIN RIVER. LOOKS SOMEWHAT LIKE TREE BRANCHES.

MANY RIVERS RUN PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER. PARALLEL PATTERN MANY RIVERS RUN PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER.

RADIAL PATTERN STREAMS DIVERGE FROM A CENTRAL HIGHER POINT IN ALL DIRECTIONS. ALSO CALLED AS CENTRIFUGAL PATTERN

TRIBUTARIES DISAPPEAR INTO THE SOIL BEFORE REACHING THE MAIN RIVER. DISAPPEARING PATTERN TRIBUTARIES DISAPPEAR INTO THE SOIL BEFORE REACHING THE MAIN RIVER. MOSTLY FOUND IN REGIONS OF LIMESTONE ROCKS.

SETLLEMENT PATTERNS 4 MAIN TYPES OF SETTLEMENT PATTERNS FOUND ON TOPO-SHEETS : NUCLEATED, DISPERSED, LINEAR & RADIAL

NUCLEATED OR COMPACT PATTERN NUMBER OF HOUSES BUILT CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER

DISPERSED PATTERN ISOLATED SETTLEMENTS SCATTERED IN AN AREA. ALSO CALLED AS SCATTERED SETTLEMENT.

FORM A RIBBON LIKE PATTERN. LINEAR PATTERN DEVELOP ALONG ROADSIDES, RIVERS, CANALS OR A RAILWAY LINE SO THAT EVERYONE CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE. FORM A RIBBON LIKE PATTERN.

LANES OF HOUSES DIVERGE IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS FROM A COMMON POINT. RADIAL PATTERN LANES OF HOUSES DIVERGE IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS FROM A COMMON POINT.
