COMMUNITY EYE CARE PROJECT PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS
Project ‘DRISHTIMITRA’, a model rural eye care project, one of the most significant in North India in terms of reach, coverage and breadth of services to cover about 45 villages Provision of high quality, comprehensive ‘Inclusive Primary Eye Care’ to entire population of project area (around 1 Lac) in a cost effective way Provision to ‘Secondary Eye Care’ for limited purpose of prevention of blindness mainly through Specialist Intervention and Cataract Surgeries
Separate delivery channels Schools for young Village camps for elderly, adults, infants and non- school going children Over a period of 18 month, project reached out to most of the target population in Gurgaon and Jajjhar districts Project sponsored by Reliance
Primary Eye Care provided to 1,00,000 people Cataract Surgeries provided to 900 people Spectacles provided to people The cost per beneficiary was low and the technology- world class
Niramaya runs, eight primary eye care centres, since 2005 Each centre, supported by a local community leader, operated once a week Common resources (medical team, medicines, equipment) enable delivery of high quality services at low cost
