Conductors - Insulators What causes charge? How does charge move ?
How Does Charge Move? + In a solid, the nucleus is fixed in place The electron carries charge In a conductor, the valence electrons are free to move around from atom to atom. In an insulator, the valence electrons are stuck in place.
Examples of a charged conductors behavior
Airplane struck by lightning
Van de Graff Generator Positive charge builds up… what does this mean concerning electrons? Once a certain amount of charge builds up on the surface, electrons are pulled out of the air from water molecules.
Insulators Insulators: all of the electrons are bound to atoms and thus the electrons can not move freely through the material –(e.g. glass, rubber and wood)
