ACARS & VDL Mode 2/AOA @ AVICOM Japan Initial Operating Conditions & Experience @ AVICOM Japan S. Matsuzaki Director Engineering

AVICOM Japan ACARS Service deployed APR. 1990 AOC Interoperability was established between SITA (1990) and ARINC (1991) Connected to KDD Yamaguchi GES for SATCOM Data service (1990) Head Office. Minato-ku, Tokyo Capital. 1,310 Million Yen Stockholders JAL, ANA, JAS, NTT, KDDI, NTT data etc

ACARS Current Status as of Oct. 2003 49 ACARS RGS in operation now. Base Frequency = 131.45 MHz 2nd Frequency = 131.25 MHz at 7 Major airport Approx. 2.2 Million Blocks / month Up link success rate : Approx. 92 %

ACARS Traffic trend Blocks

Success rate history Uplink success

Driving factor toward VDL AOA Steady growth of data link traffic Need faster & reliable means to avoid capacity constraint. VDL AOA (ACARS Over AVLC) 1st step for AOC delivery improvement ATN (VDL M2) as 2nd step for ATS

VDL/AOA implementation Contract with ARINC @ Mar. 2002 IOC : September 2003 at Narita & Kansai A/P. 10 airports were selected as VDL/AOA site at initial phase.

Performance - VDL Initial two weeks experience after IOC. Two aircraft, B767-300ER have logged on to VGS. The airplane has flown Kansai – China (Beijing, Shanghai) Kansai – Haneda Up link success = 98 % @ Gateway per message block

Difficulties - VDL VDL range seems slightly smaller than that of ACARS VDL cloud seems not continuous between Narita and Kansai. Need more VGSs to cover whole airspace over Japan. Blind area at Kansai airport Installation of one more VGS at the other side of the terminal

Planned VGS deployment 2nd phase 1st phase CTS KUH KIJ IZO SDJ FUK NRT HND KOJ   NGO KIX KCZ OKA

Emerging ATN VDL/AOA Sys can be upgraded to an ATN compliant system by adding; Software to handle ATN message Routers for distribution of ATN message And some others. (Hard & Soft) Time for the upgrade depend on the progress of ATN implementation in Japan and World wide.
