IGCSE Coordinated Science Y1 Topic: Methods of Separation & Purification Thursday, August 23 rd Lesson 1

IN: Bunsen Burner Lab According to your lab data, where is the hottest part of a Bunsen burner flame? How did you use your data to determine this? Let’s take a look at your graphs to be sure they have all of the required components.

THROUGH:

Introduction to Chemistry Unit 2 Unit 2 Big Ideas and Vocabulary Homework (due Monday): Define the Unit 2 words on the front of your Unit 2 sheet

Separation Techniques: Pre-Lab In today’s lessons we will be carrying out a separation lab in which you will separate a mixture of 4 substances: –Sand –Salt –Iron Filings –Rice grains With your lab partner, begin developing the process you will use to separate this mixture.

Separation Lab With your partner: –Create a list of steps that details your plan for separation one step at a time, and describe in words the process you will use to accomplish each step. –Draw a diagram of the setup you will use and create a list of materials to be used. Get your procedure/list checked off before you begin the actual separation.

OUT: Read the handout about different separation/purification techniques to give you some ideas for separation that could be used to isolate each of the 4 components. –Make any necessary changes to your procedure.
