Heat-Energy on the Move Does Heat Affect Matter?
Fast Facts about Heat The boiling point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas. How does the movement of the particles change as it nears the boiling point?
Fast Facts about Heat The boiling point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas. How does the movement of the particles change as it nears the boiling point? The particle move faster and faster until they escape from the liquid.
Fast Facts about Heat The freezing point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid. How does this happen?
Fast Facts about Heat The freezing point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid. How does this happen? The particles move slower until they are close together.
Let’s Learn About Matter and Energy What is energy? What is kinetic energy? What is thermal energy? What is temperature?
Let’s Learn About Matter and Energy What is energy? Energy is the ability to cause a change. Energy is the ability to do work. Our bodies use food to make energy so we can play and read and clean our rooms. The other types of energy we use help make our lives easier and more comfortable.
Let’s Learn About Matter and Energy What is kinetic energy? Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Objects gain kinetic energy as they move.
Let’s Learn About Matter and Energy What is thermal energy? Thermal energy is the motion of particles in matter. Thermal means “heat” . We feel the thermal energy of particles in matter as heat. When you add thermal energy to matter the particles move faster.
Let’s Learn About Matter and Energy What is temperature? Temperature is the measure of the average energy of motion of particles in matter. When the particles in the air move more slowly, they have less thermal energy. How do we measure temperature? A thermometer is used to measure temperature.
Let’s Review What does temperature measure? What happens if you add thermal energy to matter? If the particle in matter move faster, what has happened to the temperature? When thermal energy is removed from water, what happens to the temperature?
Temperature measures the average energy of motion of the particles in a piece of matter.
2. The particles will move faster.
3. The temperature rises
4. The temperature goes down.
Heat Transfer Unit Vocab
HEAT Heat is the result of molecules vibrating quickly. Heat is moving energy. Heat (Thermal energy) always moves from warmer to cooler objects.
TEMPERATURE Measurement of kinetic energy of molecules or the amount of thermal energy. Thermometer Fahrenheit Celsius
Conduction The transfer of heat by direct contact between objects or particles.
Convection Heat transferred by the movement of molecules within a material. (air, water, metal) Movement occurs from warmer areas to cooler areas. The movement of a substance that is caused by differences in temperature and density. Examples: wind & boiling water (earth wants things to balance out)
Heat transferred through space. Radiation Heat transferred through space. Example: The sun’s rays causing a sunburn.
Conductors are materials that transfer heat easily. Examples: metals like copper and gold
Insulators An insulator is a material that does not transfer heat easily. Examples: liquids and gases a jacket
