Comparative Civilizations 12 Comparative Civilizations 12 is a course that explores, from an archaeological perspective, the cultures and the history of the peoples found in the world today.

Comparative Civilizations 12 Comparative Civilizations 12 usually covers the following historical topics but these can vary depending upon the interests of the class: Ancient Egypt and Israel Ancient Greece and Rome The Middle Ages in Europe and Feudal Japan Renaissance Europe and Tang and Song Dynasty China The Maya, Aztecs and Inca World Religions Art History

Comparative Civilizations 12 Who takes this course: Students interested in travelling Students taking a degree, or furthering their careers, in Art or Visual Arts (Comparative Civilizations 12 may be used for an Art credit) Students going on to University or College Students who like to present their assignments in forms other than those traditionally accepted in Social Studies courses Students with an interest in studying Archaeology Students who enjoyed the course material in Social Studies 8 Students taking Literature 12

Geography 12 Topics covered in this course include: Tectonic Processes Gradational Processes Weather and Climate Biomes Resources and Environmental Sustainability

Geography 12 Who takes this course: Students who have an interest in Science and the world around them Students taking Earth Science 11, Biology 11, or Resource Management 11 Students who wish to pursue a career: – in the Forest Industry – as a meteorologist – in wildlife management – in Geology – or the Mining Industry

Law 12 Topics covered in this course include: Foundations of Law Criminal Law Civil Law Family Law

Law 12 Who takes this course: Students entering the legal or paralegal professions Students interested in a career in business or establishing their own business Students interested in Criminology Students with a general interest in protecting their interests in day to day life. For example: –Making a major purchase (home, vehicle, etc) –Marriage –Renting

First Nations Studies 12 Topics covered in this course include: Land and Relationships Contact, Colonialism, and Resistance Cultural Expressions Leadership and Self Determination

First Nations Studies 12 Who takes this course: Students interested in their own cultural heritage, or the cultures of the indigenous peoples of British Columbia Students interested in joining the RCMP Students entering the legal or paralegal professions Students interested in studying Archaeology Students interested in studying local history Students looking for an alternative to Social Studies 11 or Civic Studies 11

How We Judge Our Top Students Students in Grade 12 –Students must be enrolled in at least three Grade 12 Social Studies courses to receive the top overall student award. –Individual course awards are given out as well. –Based on in class GPA, not Provincial Exam marks –Based on in class work habits and participation –Based on discussion and assessment of in class work by all teachers of a grade 12 Social Studies course. –The Top History 12 student is eligible for the Jack Kay History Award, a financial award given at grad.

History 12 and Geography 12 There is an optional provincial exam (40% of Final Grade) for these courses. Students need to be sure of post secondary admission requirements and meet with their counselor before deciding whether or not to take one of the optional exams. Students wishing to opt out of an exam must return the completed form to their counselor; otherwise they will be required to take the exam.
