Supporting Interpretation and Implementation of the Common Core State Standards – Recommendations of a Joint Task Force Barbara Reys, AMTE President Brad Findell, ASSM President Diane J. Briars, NCSM President J. Michael Shaughnessy, NCTM President

Outline -Highlight some priority recommendations of a Report of the Joint Task Force -Share work that is underway or planned as a result of the Task Force Report -Enlist your thinking and input into what is needed by the field in relation to the CCSS.

“ The Common Core State Standards represent an opportunity – once in a lifetime – to form effective coalitions for change.” Jere Confrey, August 2010

“To coordinate these efforts, we must identify and act on immediate tasks while we simultaneously undertake long-term targets necessary to ensure the creation and implementation of higher quality and highly effective mathematics curriculum, instruction, and learning, and to ensure that these transformations are sustained for many years.” (Jere Confrey, Report of a Conference on Curriculum in Era of CCSS, August 2010)

Commissioned by AMTE, ASSM, NCSM and NCTM With funding from The Brookhill Foundation Joint Task Force on Common Core State Standards

Charge to Joint Task Force  Consider ways the four organizations can collaborate in supporting various groups (teachers, teacher leaders and educators, school and district leaders, parents) in implementing the CCSS and advancing the vision of school mathematics held by the organizations.  Generate recommendations for actions and resources that are needed to support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSS).

Members of Task Force  Diane Briars, NCSM President, Pittsburgh  Kathryn Chval, University of Missouri  Linda Curtis-Bey, New York City Public Schools  Brad Findell, ASSM President, Ohio Dept of Education  Diana Kasbaum, Wisconsin Dept of Public Instruction  Gladis Kersaint, University of South Florida  Glenda Lappan, Michigan State University (Chair)  Matt Larson, Lincoln NE Public Schools

Our Commitment: Developing leadership capacity to improve student learning opportunities  Supporting and informing the nation’s teachers about the meaning and implications of CCSS;  Providing current and emerging leaders with common materials and messages related to CCSS;  Encouraging the development of new approaches to teacher professional development based on elements of the CCSS;  Helping affiliate groups to support this work in their local environments.

Key Audiences  K–12 mathematics teachers  Mathematics teacher educators & researchers  Mathematics leaders at the state, district & school levels  Teacher leaders (e.g., coaches, resource teachers)  Mathematicians  Policy makers, including school boards  School administrators  Parents, caregivers, and families  Curriculum developers and publishers  Students

Priority Initiatives

Priority Activities 1. Launch major outreach initiative: Advancing the Vision of High Quality Mathematics Education: Supporting Implementation of the Common Core State Standards a.Toolkit of materials for sharing/discussing/using CCSS b.Regional meetings of leadership teams to disseminate Toolkit and collaborate on planning.

Priority Activities 2. Convene an Assessment Working Group to coordinate the field’s best guidance on assessment development and ensure that new student assessments address the priorities (e.g., mathematical practices) articulated in CCSS.

Priority Activities 3. Establish a Joint Committee of AMTE, ASSM, NCSM and NCTM to serve as an ongoing advisory group regarding CCSS. This Committee will serve as a professionally grounded oversight and advisory group that could, over a period of time, suggest needed actions and inform revisions of the CCSS based on their review and analysis of its implementation and impact.

Priority Activities 4. Convene a panel of professional development experts to develop a conceptual framework for teacher professional development systems to support CCSS at the school, district, and state levels.

Priority Activities 5.Develop and launch a research agenda focused on implementation of the CCSS that includes systematic study of the instantiation and implementation of the standards, monitors the impact on instruction and student learning and informs revisions of CCSS.

Other Work in Progress

NCSM Activities  Tool for analyzing instructional materials and related professional development activities –Collaboration with Bill Bush, University of Louisville, and CCSSO. –Target release date: Spring, 2011.

NCSM Activities  Illustrating the Standards for Mathematical Practice professional development materials.

NCSM Activities Webinars:  Getting Started with the Common Core State Standards: First Steps for Mathematics Education Leaders Tuesday, November 30, 3:30 to 4:30 pm EST  Diving Deeper into the Common Core State Standards Wednesday, February 23, 3:30 to 4:30 pm ES Sponsored by Carnegie Learning

NCTM Activities  CCSS PowerPoint posted on nctm.org  Making it Happen: A Guide to Implementing and Interpreting the Common Core Standards, “crosswalks” NCTM documents to CCSS.

NCTM Activities  Leadership Conference Focus in High School Mathematics— Reasoning, Sense Making & Connections. Late July, 2011  Interactive Institutes Algebra Readiness & the Common Core Early August, 2011 and following

Other Work in Progress CCSS Companion Resources  Technical Manual (J. Zimba) –Highlights structural features in the standards but not highly visible, e.g., how particular ideas connect and grow across grades.  Standards Progressions (B. McCallum)  Sample Tasks (B. McCallum) –Review board and vetting process

Joint Task Force Report on CCSS

What impact is or will the CCSS have on your own work/project? How might your work/project provide insight or support for interpretation/implementation of CCSS? In your local region, what is needed with regard to CCSS and how can the professional organizations contribute to addressing short and longer term needs? At your table ….
