ENERGY STAR ® SALES ASSOCIATE TRAINING Televisions

What is ENERGY STAR? ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program that helps consumers identify energy-efficient products. ENERGY STAR qualified products: Save energy Save money Save the environment

About ENERGY STAR The ENERGY STAR mark ranks among the highest level of influence on product purchase among all consumer emblems, similar in ranking to the Good Housekeeping Seal.

ENERGY STAR Sales Value Consumer awareness and desire for efficiency savings is high. In 2007, more than 70% of households nationwide recognized the ENERGY STAR label. Of households that purchased ENERGY STAR products in the past year: – More than 70% of them reported the label as influential to their purchasing decision. – 80% reported they are likely to recommend ENERGY STAR products to friends. – In 2007 alone, Americans—with the help of ENERGY STAR—saved $16 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 27 million vehicles. SOURCES: EPA Office of Air and Radiation, Climate Protection Partnerships Division. National Awareness of ENERGY STAR® for 2007: Analysis of 2007 CEE Household Survey. 5 ENERGY STAR Qualified Television Criteria Effective November 1, 2008, televisions earning the ENERGY STAR must meet energy-efficiency requirements in two modes: On Mode – active power consumption Standby/Off Mode – turned off, but not unplugged ENERGY STAR qualified televisions meeting the new specification will be up to 30% more efficient than conventional models. Did you know? Televisions and other home electronics often use energy even when turned off to support various features, such as clock displays, channel settings, or remote control functions. It is estimated that standby power accounts for more than 100 billion kilowatt hours of annual U.S. electricity consumption and $11 billion in annual energy costs.

The new Version 3.0 ENERGY STAR specification for televisions include requirements that: – Take into account screen size and reflect whether the television is standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD)/full high definition (FHD). – Encourage manufacturers to ship their televisions with certain energy-saving functions and features enabled. – Manufacturers test their televisions as shipped to consumers to ensure consumers realize savings. Manufacturers may make use of a forced menu that prompts the user to select home or retail setting when they first turn on their TV. If a forced menu is used, a manufacturer may test their and qualify their TV for ENERGY STAR in the home setting. ENERGY STAR Qualified Television Criteria

Saving Energy = Saving Money Today's TVs, combined with related products like DVD players, make up about 10% of a household's annual electricity bill. Starting in 2009, if every television sold in the U.S. met the new ENERGY STAR requirements, consumers would save about $1 billion annually in energy costs. ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in:

Linking Home Electronics to Climate Change Americans are watching more hours of television per day and using more energy. Did you know? The average home can cause twice the greenhouse gas emissions as the average car. Some of the new, large screen televisions consume as much electricity as a new refrigerator.

Saving Energy Helps Protect the Environment By using less energy, qualified TVs reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels at power plants. Starting in 2009, if all TVs sold in the U.S. met the new ENERGY STAR requirements, we would prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to about 1 million cars.
