LM1001 – Integrated English I Chapter #8 Writing pp.216 to 221

Exploring Ideas - p.216 I - Interviewing Someone If you had to interview someone about his or her life in the past, what topics would you ask that person? For Example family life, social life, academic life, religious life, hobbies

Can you write possible questions about the topics you brainstormed? For example What classes have you taken in this last term? / What decisions have you made about your education and career? / Have you taken any steps to pursue your goals? What are they? / What do you do for fun?

Now, think of some activities that you have done recently and write them down. Think about the answers to the questions that you have just written.

Now, get in pairs: ask your classmate the questions you wrote and write down his/her answers. Ask for details. Then, listen to your classmate’s questions and answer them by giving as many details as possible.

II - Building Vocabulary ex.5, p.217 Can you classify the following words into the categories of the chart on p.217? challenging, concentrate, education, enjoyable, goals, interesting, plan, preferences, pursue, pursuits What other concepts can you add to the chart?

IV – Developing Cohesion and Style Part I – Transitions Let’s see the use of “however”, “in addition”, “ also”, and “in fact” Look at the use of punctuation and place of those words in a sentence.

“In fact” & “In addition” Tony has been very busy. In fact, he’s been working at two jobs. Next week will be hectic for me: I have to study for final exams. In addition, I have to work extra-time after 5 p.m. some days.

“Also” She does a lot of exercise: she runs 3 kms and she also does push-ups, sit- ups and weight-lifting. He has done many things recently: he has gotten married; he has moved to a new house, and he has also bought a car.

“However” Pay Attention to Punctuation! The television is very expensive; however, it is worth it. The television is very expensive. However, it is worth it.

Marta Duarte has had a very interesting year. Last June she graduated from a tourism development course in Mexico. She received a scholarship to study English and has been attending classes here at the University of Ottawa since September. Marta travels throughout Canada and the United States. She visits hotels to study the different management systems and has learned a lot. In fact, she says that one day in a hotel is better than ten days in a classroom. However, Marta hasn’t spent all her time in Canada working. She loves to dance and goes dancing at least two nights a week. She has also found time to develop a close friendship with the manager of a big hotel here in Ottawa. She is hoping to get to know him better. (131 words)

Then, let’s do ex. 18 on p.221 and use the CHECKLIST on p.221 (ex.16) to edit your paragraph. GOOD LUCK!
