Facilitation of Broadband in SATRC Countries: Bangladesh A PRESENTATION ON Facilitation of Broadband in SATRC Countries: Bangladesh

Introduction

Broadband Service in Bangladesh Bangladesh was advancing in Information and Communication Technology at a moderate pace throughout the last decade. Since the current government took over the country has a clear vision for ICT development and is progressing towards the implementation of a Digital Bangladesh by 2021. Mobile telephony has already reached the furthest corners of the country. Due to the lack of land based infrastructure only around 4% of the total population are now connected to the Internet

Broadband Service in Bangladesh 6 mobile telephone operators have brought almost the entire population of the country under their network coverage. 4.6 million out of the 5 million internet users in the country today are dependent on the mobile telephone to access the Internet. A good number of people also use internet through Telecenters/Internet kiosks located both in the cities and the rural areas. Many of these centers also use mobile internet to run their services. Moreover mobile operators have already started many voice based information services which are providing medical, educational and agricultural information to the people around the country.

Broadband Service in Bangladesh Government is also supporting this trend by adopting friendlier policies. BTRC has already awarded licenses for WiMax and working on issuing of 3G licenses later this year. The mobile industry in Bangladesh has brought revolutionary changes to the communication landscape of the country. To make telecommunication services affordable, BTRC has issued directives to reduce the leased Internet Bandwidth cost by 33% to facilitate the end users. BTRC has already issued two NTTN license to set-up nationwide robust telecom infrastructure and to connect the rural areas to enhance digital connectivity.
