5 TYPES OF PATHOGENS 1)Bacteria- different types, classified by shape and arrangement: a)cocci (round)- Diplococci, Staphylococci, Streptococci b)bacilli (rod shaped) c)spirilla (spiral or corkscrew) * Can be treated with antibiotics

TYPES OR PATHOGENS (CONT.) 2)Fungi- ringworm, athlete’s foot, yeast infections Treated with anti- fungal medicines 3)Protozoa- animals found in contaminated water supplies can cause malaria, trichomoniasis, and amebic dysentery

PATHOGENS (CONT.) 4)Parasites- must live inside a host, can transmit disease between organisms 5)Viruses- smallest, difficult to destroy, use other cells to replicate, spread through blood and body fluids

FACTORS INFLUENCING MICROBIAL GROWTH 1) Temperature 2) pH 3) Food/nutrients 4) Moisture 5) Oxygen

METHODS THAT DESTROY MICROORGANISMS 1) Antiseptics- applied directly to the skin, not useful against all organisms Ex: Alcohol, betadine 2) Disinfectants- strong chemical to use on surfaces, not skin- kills most but not all, spores can survive Ex: Bleach and zephirin 3)Sterilization- kills microbes and spores * Ex: chemicals, radiation, gas, steam and pressure
