OSBORNE HOLLOW CREEK ROAD PROTECTION PROJECT

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream – Rural, Pool-Riffle-Pool, Stream Slope 2-3% Goals: Halt bank erosion to protect NY State Highway 7, & Widen Road Shoulder Solution: Install Deeply-Keyed (weighted toe) Vegetated Riprap

Let’s think this thing through!!!! OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – DEC 12, 2006

THE FIRST PLAN

Double Boil-UP Pools- Osborne Hollow Cr.- Near Binghamton, NY Planform View Flow Stable Riprap with veg-1 ton/ft Riprap with veg-3 tons/ft Stable Riprap with veg-3 tons/ft Riprap with veg-1 ton/ft Dig Boil-Up Pool, 35 ft in diameter, 4 ft deep Dig Boil-Up Pool, 30 ft in diameter, 4 ft deep Riprap with veg-2 tons/ft Riprap with veg-1 ton/ft

THE LANDOWNER BOO BOO

Osborne Hollow Cr.- Near Binghamton, NY Planform View Flow Landowner channel Stable Severe erosion Some erosion Landowner levee Landowner dredged area

Looking DS at landowner cutoff channel & levee OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 24, PIX BY DERRICK

Looking US from within landowner cutoff channel. Note steep slope of bottom of dug trench. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 24, PIX BY DERRICK

Landowner cutoff channel is aimed at his house, which is 35 ft from top bank!! OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 24, PIX BY DERRICK

Looking US. Headcuts migrating US thru the landowner cutoff channel. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – DEC 20, PIX BY DERRICK

During our in-field meeting with the landowner, he felt his channel aimed at his house will work, so we decided to abandon our first plan (double- boil-up pool) & go with a pure road protection scheme. We will not touch the landowner’s work, in fact we photo-documented the site pre- & post project construction

THE SECOND PLAN VEGETATED KEYS & RIPRAP

Osborne Hollow Cr.- Near Binghamton, NY Planform View Flow Landowner channel Stable Severe erosion Some erosion Landowner levee Landowner dredged area State Highway 7 Vegetated keys & riprap

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Pre-project profile view. Looking upstream State Hwy 7 Varies between 6 & 13 ft

Let the actual construction begin !!!! June 25, 2007

Looking US at toe-down trench for riprap OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 25, PIX BY DERRICK

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Weighted toe trench dug 5 ft down & 4 ft wide State Hwy 7

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Bedload cobble-gravel used as fill material to provide a 2 on 1 slope State Hwy 7

700 STREAMCO WILLOW PLANTS WERE HARVESTED BY NYS-DOT PERSONNEL FROM THE NRCS PLANT MATERIAL CENTER, BIG FLATS, NY. AVERAGE PLANT SIZE WAS FT LONG & INCH BUTT DIAMETER

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap ft long Streamco Willow a density of 5 stems/ft State Hwy 7

Looking US. Placing streamco willow in toe-down trench OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Looking US. Installing a thick layer of willow & toe stone. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Trench & bank toe area filled with DOT graded “Heavy” riprap State Hwy 7

THE “SINGLE ROW” BENT WILLOW POLE METHOD Willow placed at a density of 5 stems/ft.

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Log Using an available log held in the bucket of the trackhoe, willows are pulled streamward State Hwy 7

A long 2 by 4 was used to bend willows away from the bank. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Stone was then placed from above onto the upper section of the bank. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Using the front end loader, riprap is placed on mid & upper bank areas {landward of the willows} State Hwy 7

Placing stone on mid & upper sections of bank. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Bedload cobble- gravel is used to choke all riprap. This resulted in a 2 to 3 ft wider road shoulder. State Hwy 7

Stone is then “choked” with bed material from stream, then compacted. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Looking US. Stone & choke material results in a wider highway shoulder. OSBORNE HOLLOW CR. – JUNE 26, PIX BY DERRICK

Gravel-Cobble Bed Stream–Install Soil- Choked Vegetated (Single-Row Bent Willow Pole) Weighted-Toe Full-Bank Height Riprap Seed or hydroseed all disturbed areas State Hwy 7
