Size Of U.S. Consumer Market 50% of middle income households in the U.S. have at least one legal problem per year. Only 20% seek legal assistance from attorneys. 26% do nothing at all. An increasing percentage of consumers seek alternatives to lawyers. Potentially huge market waiting to be tapped in the U.S. for personal consumer legal services.

U.S. Market For Legal Services Reasons people give for staying away from lawyers: 1. Doubts that going to a lawyer will help. 2. A sense that the problem is not serious enough. 3. A desire to handle matters on their own. 4. Loss of Control. 5. Biggest reason is affordability.

What the U.S. Consumer Wants A much lower price for legal solutions. Services that are not billed by the hour. Convenient, faster, and trustworthy services. Systems which take the risk out of securing a legal solution.

Consumer Drivers Better educated & willing to try self-help Willing to explore alternatives to traditional law firms. Coming ubiquity of broadband net access in the U.S. Consumers want solutions without the complications of a traditional law firm experience.

Consumers Want Solutions Law Without Lawyers Consumers don’t care whether a “lawyer” solves their problem. They just want it solved.

Need for Innovation Legal Document Preparation by non-lawyers is an Innovation that changes market structure. Legal Problems can be solved by legal information and processes such as legal document preparation. Legal Information Service is a New Market service. Non-traditional provider offering a non-traditional service to non-traditional clients. All of these are elements of innovation.

Barriers to Innovation in the U.S. Over-regulation in the U.S. market protects law firms from competition. Examples: – Rules Against Unauthorized Practice of Law – Marketing restrictions. Law firm cultural constraints: Lawyer career expectations.

Innovation in the United Kingdom De-regulation of the Legal Profession Legal Advice by Non-Lawyers is permitted, e.g., Citizens Advice Bureau. Non-lawyers can own a law firm. Referrals between non-lawyers and lawyers is permitted.

U.S. Trends: Some consumers prefer the involvement of a person who can provide legal information. Some state courts have approved the concept of a non- lawyer providing legal information and legal document preparation as long as no legal advice is given. This has led to the emergence of legal document preparation firms.

Legal Information Can Solve Legal Problems Legal information combined with smart legal forms can solve people’s legal problems. A new professional role has evolved - not a paralegal - but a Legal Document Preparer or Legal Technician.

Law Without Lawyers People don’t need a lawyer to solve many legal problems. The “Legal Information Space” is a huge new market space. Market potential is great, and will continue to expand.

The Demands of Justice Access to the legal system by all is an imperative of a just Society. Lawyers are simply unable to service the need with their way of doing business and cost structure. Time for change. It happened in the UK – And now it’s happening here.
