Assignments and Grading I give TWO types of assignments --- exit slips or practice (“batting cage”) and assessment (“game”). While some assignments will not receive a grade, EVERY assignment COUNTS. Weekly “Daily Mental Math” quizzes (every Friday) are the same as a regular assignment. Graded papers are kept in a folder in the classroom. Parents are welcome to request that the folder be sent home for review at any time. (Please be sure to return it & all of the contents so we can continue to monitor our progress.)

Grades (Cont) Unit Tests will occur approximately every 2-3 weeks. Each will include multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions. Study Guides will be provided. A cumulative final will be given at the end of the year. This will cover all 6 th grade learning targets. Unit Tests and the final count TWICE as much as a regular assignment.

Late Work Policy DEADLINES MATTER!! All assignments will have a due date. It is essential that students complete & return assignments in a timely fashion. For this reason, my late work policy is as follows... 1 st qtr – Assignments will be accepted up to 3 days late with no consequence. 2 nd qtr – Assignments will be accepted up to 2 days late with no consequence. 3 rd /4 th qtr – Assignments will be accepted 1 day late with no consequence. *The school policy regarding make-up work following an absence will apply.

Homework How often will my child have homework? Expect homework in Math class approximately 2-3 days a week. Some students may finish in class. I rarely collect an assignment on the day it is made so feel free to ask your child to see his/her work. How can I know how my student is performing? Contact me anytime for an update on your child’s progress or check grades through the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus. Remember, they see every graded paper--- so ask your child!!

Why is my student NOT in Advanced Math? The Math Department at OMS spent a great deal of time reviewing the new Common Core Standards & the research & recommendations that come with them. One of those recommendations states, “Decisions to accelerate students into the Common Core State Standards for high school mathematics before ninth grade should not be rushed. Placing students into tracks too early should be avoided at all costs. It is not recommended to compact the standards before grade seven.” We will be offering a PreTest prior to each Unit --- students who are able to score 90% or above on the PreTest will be offered alternative assignments to enhance their existing knowledge.

What class will my student take next year? Students in the 7 th grade are placed in either a Math 7 class or a “compacted” 7 th /8 th grade class which will cover enough content to prepare them for Algebra I in the 8 th grade. Recommendation for the “compacted” 7 th /8 th grade class will be based on... ◦Overall Class Average ◦Spring Star Score ◦Cumulative Final Exam Score

The year at a glance… Units of Study Review Unit – Decimal & Fraction Operations Unit 1 – Rational Numbers Unit 2A – Algebraic Expressions Unit 2B – Algebraic Equations Unit 2C – Functions Unit 3 – Ratios & Proportions Unit 4A – Two Dimensional Geometry Unit 4B – Three Dimensional Geometry Unit 5 – Statistics & Data Representation

Interesting statistics… The average student spends 90 minutes per night on homework assignments. The time is broken down as follows: 15 minutes looking for the assignment minutes calling a friend for the assignment minutes explaining why the teacher is mean & does not like children... 8 minutes in the bathroom minutes getting a snack... 7 minutes checking the TV schedule... 6 minutes telling the parents that the teacher never explained the assignment minutes sitting at the kitchen table actually DOING the assignment! Smile! It’s going to be a GREAT year!!!
