Research Agenda Project (RAP): Setting a global violence prevention research agenda on behalf of VPA Masako Tanaka, Ph.D. McMaster University on behalf of the RAP group Cape town, South Africa September

Aim To establish a global violence prevention research agenda on behalf of VPA –Next 5 years –Focus on interpersonal violence (6 types) –Low-, middle-, and high-income countries

Methods: Delphi consensus development Step 1: Generate research questions Step 2: Compile items and create survey Step 3: Identify survey respondents Step 4: Administer the online survey Step 5: Score items Step 6: Develop the second survey Step 7: Summarize results for publication

Methods - Step 1 Generate research questions Participants (RAP group and their associates): Total 97 –From LMICs (17): n=23 –From HICs (14): n=74 List of research questions –For LMICs: 108 items –For HICs: 50 items

Methods – Step 2 Compile items and create survey Approach to compile items: –Combined all economic levels –Grouped lower-concept items together –Public health approach to group items –Survey is created for each abuse type –Cross-cutting area relevant to all types

Methods – Step 2 Compile items and create survey Survey structure: Section 1: Demographics Choose income levels (LMICs, HICs, or all) Choose type of abuse Section 2: for selected abuse types: Rank the priority among 4 public health steps Then rank items in order of priority within each step Section 3: Cross-cutting areas (methodology, knowledge translation, law)

Methods – Step 3 Survey respondents identified by RAP

Questions Identify the survey respondents –Should we increase respondents from LMICs? OR reduce respondents from HICs? Can we ask respondents to forward a link to the survey to their colleagues (from LMICs)? –Should we distribute the survey to relevant organizations such as UN women? –Should we make the survey available for general public to respond? –Should we seek feedback from general public about the results of the survey?

Next steps and time line Administer online survey in mid September 2011, for 2 weeks Analyze results Send second survey Prepare draft publication (summarizing Delphi process and results ) Prepare draft publication (Document suitable for general public summarizing research priorities)
