I Read It, But I Don’t Get It! Supplements to Chris Tovani’s Text Ms. Reid

It’s your job to comprehend what you read, not mine. But aren’t you the teacher? ◦ Yes, but I’m not a mind reader You need to know when there is a problem and how to solve it ◦ My job is to show you the problems we have and how we solve them We will be taking Cornell Notes You need to abbreviate with your notes. Slides will not be left up for long…

How do I know I’m stuck? 6 signals that you are stuck/lost in your rdg. The voice in your head isn’t interacting with the text. The camera in your head shuts off. Your mind begins to wander. You can’t remember what you just read. Questions that you ask while reading can’t be answered. You reencounter a character but can’t remember them.

Why am I getting stuck? What’s causing the 6 signals to happen? The 4 voices: reasons why you are getting stuck Reciting voice - ON ◦ Hearing repeated info only Distracting voice - ON ◦ Hearing things that take you away from the meaning of the text Conversation voice - OFF ◦ Hearing a discussion with the text Interacting voice - OFF ◦ Hearing BK connections, q’s, etc.

How can I fix it? Strategies to “fix- up” confusion in rdg. Make BK connections Make a prediction Stop and think about what you read Ask a q and try to answer it Create a journal Visualize Retell what you’ve read Reread Adjust your Rdg. Rate (slower/faster)
