In this lesson, you will learn how to envision the setting of a poem by identifying strong sensory words.

Let’s Review Poems are a type of creative writing. Descriptive language Repetition Rhyming

Descriptive language Wow! I can really picture that in my mind!

A Common Mistake Missing the sensory words feel hear smell tastesee

Core Lesson “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day: The score stood four to six with just an inning left to play; And so, when Cooney died at first, and Burrows did the same, A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game. A straggling few got up to go, leaving there the rest With that hope that springs eternal within the human breast; For they thought if only Casey could get one whack, at that They'd put up even money, with Casey at the bat. What does this sound like?

Core Lesson But Flynn let drive a single to the wonderment of all, And the much-despised Blake tore the cover off the ball; And when the dust had lifted, and they saw what had occurred, There was Blake safe on second and Flynn a-hugging third! Then from the gladdened multitude went up a joyous yell, It bounded from the mountain-top, and rattled in the dell, It struck upon the hillside, and rebounded on the flat; For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat. What does this look like?

Core Lesson Find strong sensory words. 1 2 Ask, “What does this look and sound like?” 3 Picture it in your mind.

In this lesson, you have learned how to envision the setting of a poem by identifying strong sensory words.

Guided Practice Find strong sensory words in the stanzas below. Use the words to help you envision the setting. There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place, There was pride in Casey's bearing, and a smile on Casey's face; And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat, No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas Casey at the bat. Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt, Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt; Then, while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip, Defiance glanced in Casey's eye, a sneer curled Casey's lip.

Extension Activities Choose a poem. Find strong sensory words. What do they look and sound like? Picture the setting in your mind.

Take the setting you’ve envisioned and sketch it out! What sensory words are difficult to sketch? Why?

Watch the “Casey at the Bat” cartoon online. Does the setting match what you’ve envisioned? Why or why not? What’s missing or different?

Quick Quiz Find sensory words in the next two stanzas of “Casey at the Bat.” Use the words to help you envision the setting. And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air, And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there; Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped: "That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said. From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar, Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore; Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted some one in the stand. And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.
