UNIT SEVEN DISEASES AND DISORDERS OF THE GU AND REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS

NEPHROTOXIC AGENTS Thomas has been diagnosed with acute renal failure and is currently recovering following prompt treatment. It is believed that the episode was caused by exposure to nephrotoxic agents found in his home. What substances might these include, and how would you encourage him to avoid them?

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES Ann is a 17 year old female who is sexually active and proud of it. When asked about how she protects herself against sexually transmitted diseases, she says that she always takes a hot shower immediately following intercourse and this seems to protect her well. How would you accurately explain the way STDs are passed from one person to another?

PROSTATE PROBLEMS Thomas is 65 years old and is complaining of frequent urination and difficulty starting and stopping urination. Recently he has noticed a tinge of pink in his urine, which he thinks may be blood. This coincides with recent episodes of impotence. These symptoms cause him concern, but he is reluctant to schedule an appointment. He specifically asks you what the doctor might do to test for possible prostate problems. How would you handle his questions?

URINARY TRACT INFECTION Mrs. Smith calls you on Monday morning complaining of burning with urination. She is also seeing dark urine that has an unusual odor. She is beginning to feel “sick” and has lower back pain. What would you do to evaluate her symptoms?

MENSTRUAL CRAMPS Susie is 18 years old and is coming to the clinic with complaints of menstrual cramps. What self-care measures might she be advised to make? What options are there to treat her for these cramps? What procedures might you be prepared for in the exam room?

POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE How is this condition diagnosed? What are some signs and symptoms? How is it followed by physicians? How might it be treated?
