Update on WP4 and Tsunami Use Case CoopEUS annual meeting, Helsinki, September 29 – October 3, 2014 L. Beranzoli (INGV/EMSO Interim Office) M.M.R. Best (EMSO Interim Office)

Objectives WP4 WP 4 will lay the ground for a sustainable, collaborative working environment between the US Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) and the European counterpart, EMSO. Objectives: To identify commonalities and gaps between the two OOI and EMSO. This analysis will define the necessary steps that will lead to mutually beneficial long term cooperation and a common roadmap on shared priorities. To successfully share knowledge and best practices, especially among EC and US Research Infrastructures. To organize meetings on topics that are relevant for an efficient, sustainable operation of the Research Infrastructures. To integrate stakeholder groups. In particular, scientific communities working in the field of marine environmental monitoring as for instance ESONET-VI, SEADATANET and other related European initiatives. To foster the relationship between the US and EU observatory initiatives it is also planned to organize an exchange of scientific personnel for time periods of several weeks.

Deliverables WP4 D4.1) Fact Finding Report: INGV will compile a report about the commonalities and complementarities in the observing infrastructures on both sides of the Atlantic. This report will summarize the findings of task 4.1. COMPLETE D4.2) Gap Analysis Report: INGV will compile a gap analysis report about data accessibility and availability in the ocean domain. This report will summarize the findings of task 4.2. COMPLETE D4.3) Report on EC-US workshop: UniHB will compile a report on EC-US workshop/exchange(s) with focus on best practice, joint standards and the definition of possible case studies for demonstrating data interoperability. This report will be related to the activities within task 4.3. COMPLETE D4.4) Report on use cases: INGV will compile a report on the outcome of the case studies for future application and development of ocean observatories. This report will summarize the findings of task 4.4. [month 30]

Status Gap analysis and fact finding Workshops/meetings Tsunami use case

Gap Analysis Traditionally what is missing for effective collaboration and interoperability. However, in a field as young as ocean observing, gaps may also indicate limits of technology – for example challenges of instrument maturity, deployment maturity, communications/network complexity, and in general amount of effort to get data on shore. Shared efforts to overcome technological challenges are therefore particularly beneficial to all parties. In as multidisciplinary a “field” as ocean sciences, gap analysis may also indicate where the blind areas are between disciplines.

OOI Status

GEOSS Interoperability Test Robert Huber (EMSO) co-organized the GEOSS workshop July in Bremen OOI sent Nancy Galbraith (WHOI) as a participant Both have registered data in GEOSS next steps: automated data registration and interoperability tests
