BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT August 7, 2014

Standards We follow the Common Core State Standards set forth by the State of California.

Our Goal for Students To create a learning environment where the children feel safe to take risks, are motivated and enthusiastic about learning, and develop compassion and respect for one another.

LANGUAGE ARTS Houghton Mifflin RtI – response to instruction Early Intervention Reading Model – discuss at conferences Writer’s Workshop- Units of Study (narrative, descriptive, research report, letter, story, instructions) Spelling vs. High-Frequency Handwriting Without Tears

MATH Mathematical Reasoning & Problem Solving –CGI Cognitively Guided Instruction Number Fluency and Number Sense Algebraic Thinking begins in Kindergarten & 1 st Grade Measurement and Geometry threaded throughout the year Strong emphasis on math vocabulary We are adopting a new math series called My Math

SOCIAL STUDIES Reflections curriculum Citizenship: Developing respect for self, others, and the community. Awareness of cultures of the world Patriotism and Map Skills Values

TECHNOLOGY/LIBRARY Computer lab 30 minutes per week –Basic computer skills Power Point and LCD projector in every classroom Library once a week – check out books that are kept in the classroom Laptop cart and iPads for the school iPads for 1 st grade (grant) Any obsolete technology is greatly appreciated!

MUSIC / P.E./Art Music every other week with a music teacher P.E twice a week *make sure your child wears tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. *children should be wearing tennis shoes everyday for playground safety at recess and lunch Arts Advantage lessons

HOMEWORK Homework posted each Friday Homework is due every Friday Plan on spending minutes per night – building responsibility, not frustration Check your child’s work!!!! ***Most important: Read each night with your child!

Math Homework Math Homework will be sent home weekly for the first unit Please do not go ahead as those concepts have not been taught in class yet Please turn in math homework or signed pacing guide on the due date
