Agenda Bathing water quality in the North West Recent UU asset improvements Future plans for asset improvements Other improvements Real time spill warning Coastal modelling

Bathing Water Performance in the North West 100% compliance with mandatory standards under the final year of the previous Bathing Water Directive

Sources of pollution

Our plans for the next 5 years UU’s business plan is now agreed with OFWAT Our Transitional Investment Programme has allowed us to make a good start on bathing water schemes ahead of the new Asset Management Plan starting in April 2015.

Fylde Coast Over £100m to be invested to bring about improvements to the Fylde’s 8 bathing waters Key improvements on the Fylde coast include Replacement of Harrowside outfall with a longer pipe during 2015 (subject to final permission from MMO) By summer 2016 – 12,000m3 storage will be built and commissioned in Anchorsholme Park By 2018 approx 4,000m3 additional storage to be built at Lennox Gate Pumping Station By 2018 surface water separation in Blackpool South area By 2019 Anchorsholme outfall will be replaced with a longer outfall and a new pumping station will be required. Improvements also planned for Preston Storm Tanks and Chorley Storm Tanks

Allonby Replacement sewer on Allonby beach to reduce infiltration in the network Upgrading of the WwTW to increase flow through the works including UV treatment Increased storage to reduce the number of storm spills MilestoneDate Contract AwardMar 15 Start on site (beach works) Apr 15 Completion of beach works Jun 15 Completion of project Mar 16

Real time spill warning system Upgrading for 2015 Blackpool North Blackpool Central Bispham Cleveleys New for 2015 West Kirby Meols Moreton Ainsdale Fleetwood Existing Morecambe North St Bees Allonby Allonby South Walney Biggar Bank Walney Sandy Gap Walney West Shore Summary 18 of the 31 bathing waters in the North West will be on the system for 2015 All bathing waters predicted to be poor will be on the real time warning system for 2015 apart from Haverigg and Silloth which have lower usage No UU assets Formby Silecroft

During 2015 we will deliver a £4m programme to build coastal models for the North West region Next steps Implement appropriate Operational and Maintenance regimes on key sites e.g. criticality and pre-season asset checks Inform our approach to provision of real time spill information Identify the assets that would need to be reported under the regulations in the event of an incident. Ensure that spill information is provided for the appropriate assets following a bathing water or shellfish bed sample failure. Identify whether further work is required on UU assets beyond 2020 to move towards Excellent Coastal modelling programme
