RDG 050 Active Reading and Thinking

ACTIVE READING Keys to success in College: Knowing how to study Liking the course Work hard Previous background in the course content A good teacher required What else is required?

READING! Do you like to read? How many courses are you taking that requires reading? When will you do your reading? How can you become an ACTIVE READER? Will you put forth the effort to succeed?

READING AND THINKING-- PARTNERS IN ACADEMIC SUCCESS Rationalizing why reading is difficult: Physical aspects of reading: being conscious (not asleep); good posture; moving the eyes along text; turning pages (if paper book) Attitudinal aspects: seems boring; words too long; not relevant; waste of time; too much to read Memory and thinking: cant remember anything I just read; dont understand what I read

READING AND THINKING-- PARTNERS IN ACADEMIC SUCCESS PASSIVE READING HENDERS LEARNING How are we passive in reading for homework? -Read all assignments the same way -Have to read it -Read everything at the same speed -Accept everything in text as automatically true -Study lecture notes and the textbook separately -Check length of assignment and get all stressed about length before starting the reading -Read (only) -Read until done the same way every time

Your Learning Style Different students learn better in different ways – there are: visual learners, tactile learners, auditory learners Can you read with outside noise and disruptions?

Active reading tips Include: Tailor reading to suit each assignment Adjust the speed to suit the purpose Question ideas in the assignment Compare and connect textbook material with lecture content Skim text headings to find out what an assignment is about before beginning to read

More tips to become an Active Reader Make sure you understand what you are reading as you go along Read with a pencil in hand, highlighting, jotting notes and marking key vocabulary Develop personalized strategies that are particularly effective
