Where did we begin? What has changed throughout the years?

Day 1:

 Follow the link to explore the history of Ellis Island:  x.htm x.htm

 With a partner, discuss one interesting thing you learned from the information on Ellis Island.  Now, discuss with your partner

 What did you find interesting about the information today?  What would you share with someone about Ellis Island?  In your journals, record your thinking on Ellis Island. Write down what you would tell your family or friends about today’s discovery.

Day 2:

 You will be seeing several maps of how Illinois and our area has changed.  After viewing the maps, you will discuss with your knee-to-knee partner what you notice.  Then we will share ideas and record those great thoughts.  LOOK CAREFULLY!

 Discuss how trains would have helped Pecatonica many years ago.  Discuss why we should or should not have a train that goes through town today.

We looked at a map, pictures of the old train depot and electric street car, and two cartoons involving trains. Write down what you would tell your family or friends about today’s discovery.

 What did you find interesting about the information today?  What would you share with someone about our downtown throughout the years?  In your journals, record your thinking on downtown Pecatonica. Write down what you would tell your family or friends about today’s discovery.

 After reviewing the information in our slides from the last five days, make one final journal entry to express any thoughts you have regarding information you have learned.  Once you have finished your journal entry, go on to the final page and make a list of questions about things you would like to know more about. These questions can relate just to Pecatonica or they may include questions about ancestors, Ellis Island, or even how the first train tracks were made. Be creative!
