1 The Master Teacher--Summary The Role of the Teacher is to join the Holy Spirit in guiding, instructing, and shepherding God’s people toward obedient living in Christ. It is not enough for the teacher to dispense truth, he/she must model, hold fast to, and warn in relation to it. A teacher cannot just be a giver of information, but rather a catalyst for life-change.

2 The Goal of our teaching  The rock-solid teacher, Jesus, is our example!  We trust Him for our salvation.  We trust Him for our spiritual growth.  Now, let’s trust Him for our ministry!  We want to “Teach like Jesus”.

3 Definition of Teaching One hand on the student...Have a grasp of the needs of our students – John 2:24 the other on the Word of God...Want tograsp the meaning of the Scriptures – John 1:1 bringing them together for life change. The real skill and art of teaching is leading our students to life change! – Col 1: 27b-29

4 Which Orientation Are You?  Student Orientation? Asks, “Who am I teaching?”  Subject Orientation? Asks, “What am I teaching?”  Style Orientation? Asks, “How am I teaching?”

5 Teaching approaches  To be master teachers, we must develop all three orientations: by observing what Jesus did by establishing wise principles of teaching by putting the principles into practice  This follows an effective pattern for teaching that is outlined in Scripture: From the passage; To the principle Toward the practice

18 Telling a Story  Three things to remember when telling a story: 1. Tell a story with purpose 2. Use the six journalistic questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? 3. Land the meaning Jesus told stories to prompt listeners to obey.

23 The final sentences of Jesus ’ parables prompted a response:  He usually didn ’ t have to state the main point, because it was obvious from the story.  He usually established the analogy in the first sentence. For example, The kingdom of heaven is like... (Matthew 13:31).  He often ended His stories with a convincing question: How is He then his Son? ” (Luke 20:44b, KJV). 4. Apply for life change

25 Using Questions  For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? (Luke 9:25, KJV)  “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that.” (Luke 6:32-33, NIV)

27 Principles of Asking Questions  “Have you not read?” – Jesus rarely asked knowledge questions such as Who, Where, When? but he often asked probing questions such as Why or How?  Pauses are effective  Versatility: start or end with a question  Encourage to ask questions.  Rarely use “yes” or “no” questions.

28 Matthew 9:36 “When Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”.

29 What motivates students?  Students are curious.  Students are “depraved.”  Students are loved.  Students have physical needs.  They need new opportunities.  They need discipline.  They need God’s shepherding.  They need safety and providence.

30 What motivates students?  Students can think rationally and critically.  Students have social needs.  Students can respond and change.  They need challenges to think and discern.  They need to make and develop relationships.  They need faith and growth in Christ.

31 What do we learn about Jesus’ motivation from Revelation 2-3? 1. He knew their situation. 2. He started with the positive first, and built on strengths. 3. He took action steps to manage their weak areas. 4. He provided encouragement and feedback.
