WINNER, MOST RECOMMENDED PROJECT EXPERIENCES FROM THE FIELD 2013 ONE HEN CAMPAIGN INNOVATION EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME

 History Founded in 2009 by University of Nairobi students.  How it works ◦ IEP gives rural Kenyan women and youth a “micro-loan” of an indigenous hen and a cage. ◦ IEP trains beneficiaries on entrepreneurship, poultry management, agribusiness, financial management, adaptation to climate change, value chain linkages, and other cross-cutting issues. What is the One Hen Campaign?

 Economic self-sufficiency among youth and women.  Source of income from selling eggs and chicken.  Beneficiaries’ Savings & Credit Cooperative Society where they access finance as a group and obtain cheap credit, share dividends, and create market linkages for products.  Basic business/financial literacy skills. Results for Beneficiaries

 Improved food security from increased consumption of eggs, chicken, and indigenous vegetables produced by kitchen gardens well nourished by chicken manure.  Reliable database on production and the costs of different production systems (in progress).  Cottage industry blossomed in villages to manufacture chicken feed locally.  Reduction of urban migration as youth and women create enterprises that employ staff.  Plays an important cultural role. Results for the Community

 Lack enough resources to deliver services to all members  Poor terrain (impassable roads during rainy season)  Political interference  Need technical expertise in setting up structures for our business model  High cost of chicken feed Current Challenges Awards

 Strategic Partnerships  Funding Support for: o Transportation/ o Motor vehicles o Training o Feeding o Treatments and Vaccinations o Construction costs for Ultra-modern village poultry houses o Office equipment Invitation to Join Us
