Magnetism Magnet : the word is derived from place “Magnesia” in Asia minor, Greece, where “Loadstones” were found which attract iron pieces. The loadstone was called as “Magnetite” The phenomenon is similar to electrostatics in which “charged bodies” attract feathers or light bodies. Magnetic substance also show noncontact force.

Magnet Magnets are classified on the basis of their shapes. Bar magnet Horseshoe magnet Disk Magnet Magnetic needle

Classification of substances The substance which attract towards magnet is called as magnetic substance. Strongly attracted then Ferro magnet Just attracted then paramagnet For example Nickel, cobalt, iron The substance which remain unaffected by magnet are called as non- magnetic (diamagnetic). Like plastic, rubber, copper, sulphar

Properties of magnet Magnet always have two poles. When a magnet is freely suspended it aligns itself in north south direction. The pole seeking north direction is called as north seeking pole or just north pole The pole seeking south direction is called as south seeking pole or just south pole.

Properties of magnet Magnetic force is concentrated at poles. Like magnetic poles repel each other Unlike magnetic poles attract each other. The poles of magnet can never be separated. If a magnet is cut in between then we get two magnets with poles for each one.

Use of magnet Magnets are used for door catcher Pin holders In every speakers In every microphone In instruments like cyclotron Recording sound or video in magnetic tapes ( now not in use)
