CANEUS NPS has a bold, paradigm-busting vision of making space truly affordable and “on demand” via a revolutionary class of Nano and Pico satellites that will drastically lower the cost of space missions and increase the frequency of the launches.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 5 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite CANEUS NPS CANEUS NPS originated as a concept of CANEUS, a Canadian-led worldwide professional organization, and benefits from the global members expertise. The CANEUS organization charter is to advance the maturity of emerging Micro-Nano-Technology concepts via the development of end-to-end system development strategies. CANEUS NPS represents the first venture to demonstrate the CANEUS approach of rapid, cost- effective development of Micro-Nano-Technologies.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 6 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite The CANEUS NPS Alliance (Cont’d) CANEUS NPS has orchestrated a strategic alliance that has brought together –Angstrom Aerospace Corporation, Sweden, with a radically new multifunctional satellite architecture –Astrium UK, supported by EADS-ST (France) and EADS- CRC (Germany) who will collaborate in developing the nanosatellite demonstrator and also supply core sub- systems for the Nano-Picosatellites. –A number of other large aerospace organizations that will work with CANEUS NPS; either as Prime End Users or as project advisors –Universities and Research Labs in Canada, USA, Europe and Japan that have communicated expressions of interest.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 9 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite Small satellites - Background Traditionally, “small” satellites have been in the kg range. Several universities have created student satellites in the 1kg, Cubesat class. However, these are low-budget experimental satellites and are not commercially viable products. Even though conventional launch opportunities are few and far between, Nano and Pico Satellites can benefit from nearly every launch opportunity as secondary payloads due to their small size & autonomy. Currently, there are no established players in this untapped market. By offering a new and exciting paradigm to make space accessible and affordable, CANEUS-NPS is poised to be the early market leader.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 10 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite Planned Mission Offerings Space Validation flights for new technologies being developed by large Aerospace Contractors for future commercial / scientific missions. Spacecraft constellation missions for: Space weather/Solar Storm early warning Land-use imaging missions. 24/7 Weather prediction Scientific missions

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 11 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite The Case for Space Technology Validation –Technologies being developed for Space suffer from a Catch-22: “We cannot fly technologies that have not flown before” –Satellite mission planners are not prepared to take the risk of carrying new experimental payloads that could potentially damage or jeopardize the primary mission. –Currently, access to space validation opportunities is limited for a vast number of new technologies since the existing validation approaches are prohibitively expensive and are very infrequent.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 12 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite The CANEUS-NPS Competitive Advantage –Currently, satellites are akin to luxury automobiles in that they are custom-made, expensive machines that few can afford. –CANEUS NPS offers a “Henry Ford” approach to making space accessible and affordable.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 13 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite CANEUS NPS Competitive Advantage (cont’d) CANEUS NPS is the world’s only Nano-Pico-Satellite developer with a novel, multifunctional architecture, a unique feature that has not been found in other small satellite developments. CANEUS NPS takes on the entire, end-to-end development from mission design, fabrication, assembly and testing, to launch and ground operations. CANEUS NPS offers its customers a low-cost, rapid means of access to space missions. CANEUS NPS provides its customers with superior value in design, delivery and post-launch service.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 14 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite CANEUS NPS Competitive Advantage CANEUS NPS sub-systems are MEMS and Nano Technology enabled and are based on integrating important spacecraft functions rather than separate sub-systems.

Copyright 2005 © CANEUSPage 15 CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico-Satellite CANEUS NPS Nano-Pico Satellite Architecture Small satellite technology goes beyond simple miniaturization. Miniaturizing conventional satellite architectures will not work because of the limited size, mass and power of Nano- Pico Satellites. A radically new system architecture, such as the proposed Multifunctional Architecture is needed to fully and efficiently use the capabilities of advanced Micro-Nano-Technologies. CANEUS NPS sub-systems are MEMS and Nano Technology enabled and are based on integrating important spacecraft functions rather than separate sub-systems.
