Cargill Grant

Program Presenters Angie Jerabek Al Wachutka Erica Lenzen Mark Miller Pat Hartman

The Need Varying levels of expertise Low Achievement Scores Standards require Engineering Reading and Math At the HS level less than 1% of minority students in IB/AP Courses

What Makes this Program Unique? High School Science Teachers not outside experts Connection (Students and HS teachers and HS teachers and Elementary teachers)

The Start of the Process Science in SLP Elementary Schools(supplies and budget) Met with TOSAs from each building Team met at each building All K-5 teachers in the district attended a EiE training by SMM Aligned standards, PYP(IB) and EiE

Road Blocks Will this create extra work for us? Can a High School teacher effectively teach elementary students? Will we lose elementary FTEs? Will each school have equal access to supplies and resources? Initial Elementary Teacher Concerns:

Road Blocks Elementary grade team relationships and ability to plan in advance Difficulty linking MN Science standards to available EiE kits in grades 3 and 5 Misunderstanding science & standards Teacher difficulty understanding how science can integrate into PYP planners

What The Program provides EiE Instruction Curriculum Design and Alignment Science Demonstrations Family Science Night SLP Science Website Supplies

Engineering is Elementary Javier likes to play in his fort, which is across a small creek from his home in Texas. When his stepsister follows him, she wobbles on the makeshift bridge and falls Lesson 1: Literacy into the creek. forbid him from going to his fort, so Javier comes up with a plan: he must build a bridge that is both strong and stable. Luckily, Javier's stepfather Joe is a civil engineer and can guide him through the Engineering Design Process.

Engineering is Elementary In Building Bridges, students learn about force - pushes and pulls - and investigate the forces at work in different structures. Lesson 2: Expanding Knowledge Lesson 3: Background Learning Students collect and analyze scientific data as a foundation for their final challenge. In Building Bridges, students study the effect of force on three different types of bridges.

Engineering is Elementary Lesson 4: Engineering Design Challenge Students must apply what they have learned, using the Engineering Design Process. In this kit, students create a strong and stable bridge.

Engineering is Elementary Practice of Science 1)Raise questions about the natural world and seek answers by making careful observations, noting what happens when you interact with an object, and sharing the answers with others The Practice of Engineering 1)Identify a need or problem and construct an object that helps to meet the need or solve the problem. 2)Describe why some materials are better than others for making a particular object and how materials that are better in some ways may be worse in other ways. 3)Explain how engineered or designed items from everyday life benefit people Forces and Pulls 1)Describe how push and pull forces can make objects move. 2)Describe how things near Earth fall to the ground unless something holds them up. Minnesota Science Standards

Engineering is Elementary Grade 1 Earth Materials Butterfly Life Cycle Solids & Liquids Grade 2 Forces Weather Plants

Engineering is Elementary Grade 3 Sound Light Grade 4 Rocks & Minerals Electricity Water Cycle Grade 5 Simple Machines

Demonstrations See video at Classroom 4 th grade

Family Science Night Over 600 people attended Corporate Presenters: Cargill, 3M, General Mills, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, King Controls Family Challenge Stations Other participants: IB Physics Students, City of SLP, Mosquito Control, Minnehaha Watershed District, High School Science Teachers,

SLP Science Website provides students the opportunity to ask us science questions. provides parents an opportunity to see what is being taught. provides teachers with curriculum information on each EiE kit.
