What is information technology? Information Technology (IT) is the modern method which makes use of computers and software to manage information. We can see that IT is assisting us in almost every aspect of life. Management of information is the heart and soul of IT.

Evolution of IT The evolution of IT began in the 1970s. The evolution can be classified by decades as follows:- 1970s Dumb terminals interfaced with mainframe computers 1980s Era of personal computers 1990s Rise of the intranet and birth of the Internet 2000s Era of the Internet 2010s Cloud computing and the move towards a virtual world

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT All our work related applications are now completely automated, thanks to the IT sector. The advancement of the IT sector has resulted in automated: Administration of entire systems. Production and manipulation of sensitive information. Cultural development and communication. Streamlining of business processes and timely upgrades.

1 st Generation – Vacuum Tubes ( ) In 1949 Wilkes assembled the EDSAC. Mark 1 Computer used Williams memory in Forrester installed Magnetic memory in The 701 was shipped in 1953.

2 nd Generation-Transistor ( ) IMB’s 7000seris,the first transistorized computers. IMB had an 81.2% share of the computer market. IMB announced the System/360.

3 rd Generation-Integrated Circuits ( ) Digital Equipment Corp. introduced the PDP- 8. The PDP-8 was the 1 st commercially successful mini-computer. PARC invented the personal computer graphical user interface.

Indian IT industry The IT industry in India has gained a brand identity as a knowledge economy due to its IT and ITES sector. Indian IT industry contributes to the national economy and one of the biggest job creators. No other Indian industry was more successful as to stand against its global competitors. The sector has increased its contribution to India's GDP from 1.2% in 1998 to 7.5% in 2012.

History of IT revolution in India TATA group laid the foundation of Indian IT revolution. In 1970, TCS aligned with Burroughs Corporation, to carry out outsourced application services in Mumbai. The 1984 government policy, provided the provision for software exports through satellite links. NASSCOM, a regulatory body on Indian IT services was set up in 1988 at Mumbai to assist trade and business in IT and ITES.

Future of IT in India IT has the potential of transforming a developing nation to a developed nation. It has certainly played a major role in the development of India. Some of the sectors which has seen tremendous growth because of IT are telecommunication, education, public transport.

IT in Business and Entrepreneurship IT is a boon for the field of business entrepreneurship. It plays a vital role in e-commerce- the buying and selling of products and services over the internet, electronic fund transfer, smart cards, etc.

IT in Communication Telecommunication is one of the most revolutionized fields of technology through the development of IT, impacting the lives of a majority of people in the world today. Mobile phones, I-pads, internet, , chatting are common devices that has enabled this revolution.

IT in Healthcare IT is set to play a major role in the field of healthcare. It helps in medical consultancy, e.g. sending medical reports to expert doctors anywhere in the world for seeking an opinion or advice. It helps in online diagnosis based on a description of the symptoms conveyed electronically.
