Why does animal testing take place? Because it has been common practice for scientists for the last century British Law says any new drug used for medicine must be tested on at least two different types of live mammal This is to make sure the drug works and does not hurt you In some countries animals are used to test beauty products- this is not allowed in Britain

Does it work? Helped to develop vaccines for measles, rabies and mumps Drugs developed to help fight effects of HIV and Cancer rely on animal tests Operations on animals have helped to develop organ transplant and open- heart surgery techniques.

Are there alternatives?

Activity Using the handout resources and input provided from the slideshow produce a brainstorm on the A2 sheet that argues on one side of the debate and then perform a 90 second presentation to the rest of the group FOR- Animal testing is a necessary evil and should be accepted AGAINST- Animal testing is not necessary and should not be accepted
