Lesson 1 Earth’s Landforms
Earth’s thin surface layer. It’s made up of huge thick slabs made of rock called plates witch float on hot liquid rock of the mantle next layer down.

, Volcanoes are cracks in the earths crust when there is to much pressure liquid magma shoots into the crust and a volcano is formed. Firstly its active.

Earth: Fast Changes By: Erin Fry Focus on Vocabulary and Text Features (Bold print and Illustrations)

Text Features Use the text feature of bold print to help you find the important words. Use the illustrations to help you understand the word.

Plates Turn to page 5 in the text. Find the word plates. The crust is broken into huge pieces called plates.

Faults Turn to page 6. Find the word faults. The crust has many cracks in it. The cracks, or breaks, are called faults.

Magma Turn to page 14. Find the word magma. Ash, solid rock, and magma, or liquid rock, erupt through the cone.

Ring of Fire Go to page 14. Find the words Ring of Fire. More than half of the world’s volcanoes are located in what is known as the Ring of Fire.

Illustrations Let’s find some pictures in the book to help us understand our words. Write down how many you found for each word! Plates ______ Faults ______ Magma ______ Ring of Fire ________
