Learning targets on parade Susan Brookhart & Connie Moss Essential Question: Why is it important to have Learning Targets?

Seven characteristics of AN Essential question 1. Is open-ended; that is, it typically will not have a single, final, correct answer. 2. Is thought-provoking and intellectually engaging, often sparking discussion and debate. 3. Calls for higher-order thinking, such as analysis, inference, evaluation, prediction. It cannot be effectively answered by recall alone. 4. Points toward important, transferable ideas within (and sometimes across) disciplines. 5. Raises additional questions and sparks further inquiry. 6. Requires support and justification, not just an answer. 7. Recurs over time; that is, the question can and should be revisited again and again.

Characteristics of a Learning Target Describes exactly what students will learn in today’s lesson. Is written in developmentally appropriate language students can understand. Is written from the point of view of students who have yet to master the content, skill or process that makes up the target. Is connected to the performance of understanding/ assessment for today’s lesson. Contains LOOK FORS students can use to judge how close they are to the target in language that describes mastery of the target, rather than in grading or scoring language ( letters, points, numbers correct, percentage, etc.)

Objectives vs learning targets Objectives are written in terms the teacher understands. Students have to work to see what the teacher wants. Objectives are written for the teacher, not the student. A Learning Target must meet the characteristics discussed on the previous slide.

USD 475 Definition of Learning Target: Learning Target: “A description of what the student is going to learn by the end of today’s lesson, stated in developmentally appropriate language that the student can understand. Learning target language is framed from the point of view of a student who has not yet mastered the target and includes student look-fors—criteria that students can use to judge how close they are to the target—stated in language that describes mastery (rather than grading and scoring). The learning target is connected to the specific performance of understanding for today’s lesson.”  A learning target is what the students think the aim of the lesson they are living through at that moment. It has an expiration date of one lesson.

Summer Task Force Work Year at a Glance for MATH—with Units of Study that will include Learning Target examples. We can’t write them all as only you know your students’ needs. Go MATH has Learning Targets—but they call them Essential Questions.

The Nine Action Points of Learning Targets Learning targets are the first principle of meaningful learning and effective teaching. Today’s lesson should serve a purpose in a longer learning trajectory toward some larger learning goal. It’s not a learning target unless both the teacher and the students aim for it during today’s lesson.

The Nine Action Points of Learning Targets Every lesson needs a performance of understanding to make the learning target for today’s lesson crystal clear. Expert teachers partner with their students during a formative learning cycle to making teaching and learning visible and to maximize opportunities to feed students forward. Setting and committing to specific, appropriate, and challenging goals lead to increased student achievement and motivation to learn.

The Nine Action Points of Learning Targets Intentionally developing assessment-capable students is a crucial step toward closing the achievement gap. What students are actually doing during today’s lesson is both the source of and the yardstick for school improvement efforts. Improving the teaching-learning process requires everyone in the school—teachers, students, and administrators---to have specific learning targets and look-fors.
