Improvement in Patient Care 25 years of the Hubble telescope

Improvement in Patient Care We must be more professional … Professional meaning…

Improvement in Patient Care Direct: Clinical:  better ‘cure’  reduced complications  Speedier diagnosis and treatment etc… Indirect:  Management/organisational  Teaching/training etc…

New CPD scheme (2014) Meaningful Directed to better patient care Less ‘counting points’ More flexible Modern Encourage professional behaviour

250 ‘points’ over 5 years 1 point approximates to 1 hour of education Doctors should undertake a variety of CPD in line with their personal need, discuss at appraisal Documentation of CPD kept for appraisal CPD ‘examined’ at appraisal (not by RCR) 5 yearly certificate issued by RCR!

Main changes in 2014 edition: Category I (generally external) Category II (generally internal) abolished All education, wherever achieved, is education! Internet (Dr. Google!), reading, meetings …

100 points from going to meetings – “only” restriction “extra” value from meeting colleagues Encourage Trusts to fund CPD Ensure variety of CPD – not simply internet! Presentation of new developments etc

Importance of outcomes of CPD Point for CPD activity Extra point for considered reflection Another ‘impact’ point for improvement in patient care (may be months later) Aim of new scheme:  think about CPD,  Use to improve care

Research the problem Learn about new topics

How are the ‘best’ performing? Is it realistic in my unit?

Learn about data collection Appropriate interpretation of data

Management techniques Educate colleagues Research equipment…

Manage staff Purchase new equipment …

CPD for Audit Research re. subject Background medical, statistics … Reading around audit methods Presentation of audit projects Reflection on effect of audit Putting improvements into place for better patient care

Templates Reflection – help guide thoughts- to be useful

Evaluating impact of CPD

CPD summary Templates: designed to help Not mandatory Recording CPD important for Appraisal/revalidation: How? … personal choice

Encourage doctors… Move on from “counting points”, filling portfolio etc Use CPD, Audit, examination of errors/SUIs etc. constructively for learning Be professional about “Appraisal” SI Endeavour to use our education for better patient care!

Work for better patient care… …and write it down!
