What is a genre? Definition from Dictionary.com: Genre (noun) 1: a kind of literary or artistic work 2: a style of expressing yourself in writing [syn: writing style, literary genre] 3: a class of artistic endeavor having a characteristic form or technique.”

Let’s look at Fiction Genres

Fiction Genres Traditional Literature Stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. This includes:  Folktales  Legends  Fables  Fairy Tales  Tall Tales  Myths

Fiction Genres Fantasy A story including elements that are impossible such as:  talking animals  magical powers

Fiction Genres Science Fiction  A type of fantasy that uses science and technology such as:  Robots  Time machines

Fiction Genres Realistic Fiction  A story using made up characters and situations that could happen in real life.

Fiction Genres Historical Fiction  A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up from the author’s imagination.

Fiction Genres Mystery  A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story.

Now let’s look at Non-Fiction Genres

Non-Fiction Genres Informational Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics like:  Sports  Animals  Science  History  Geography  Weather

Non-Fiction Genres Biography The story of a real person’s life written by another person.

Non-Fiction Genres Autobiography The story of a real person’s life written by that same person
