Highway 2—Risk--

Risk “Assuming you can be successful just by not doing anything wrong is as unrealistic as expecting to grow roses by pulling up all the weeds.” --Gary Blair— No risks, no rewards What do you think history’s most successful campaign slogan is..of all time? “Just Do It.” by Nike Last year they earned nearly 20 billion dollars in revenue. Started with a waffle iron and a cross country coach

Who am I "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career I've lost almost 300 games Twenty six times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed…and we lost.” Cut from HS team….twice I've failed over and over and over in my life. And that's why I succeed!"

Even with all that failure…. NBA World Champion: 1991, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98 NBA Rookie of the Year: 1985 NBA All Rookie Team: 1985 NBA Defensive Player of the Year: 1988 All NBA Defensive Team: 1988, 91, 92, 96, 98 NBA Slam Dunk Champion: 1987,88 Gold in the 1984 L.A. and 1992 Barcelona Olympics NCAA Champion/Full ride to North Carolina Most points scored in NBA Playoffs Scored 38,079 points in actual NBA games Named as the NBA’s Greatest all-time player Earns $30 million a year even today

Risk vs. Escape Risk-A factor, thing, element, or course involving uncertain danger; a hazard. The possibility of suffering harm or loss; danger. Escape(fear/avoidance)-to succeed in avoiding (any threatened or possible outcomes or evil) The most successful people are the Biggest Risk- takers… But they are also the Biggest mistake makers!...they have learned to not let their mistakes get them down

Keys to success 1. Define success for yourself. Success is defined by who we are, what we believe in and what we think it means to be successful. Success possessing the capability for self- determination Success is a by-product and NOT and end in itself. Set personal, academic, and career goals. 2. Keep your goals high

3. Understand your abilities—Play to your strengths. Focus on your abilities and less on things you are not strong in. Focus on the “Cans” and not the “Cant's” Develop strategies to meet your goals. 4. Your life should not be defined by the assumptions of others……its ok to be your own self-advocate You are only a victim if you choose not to take charge of the situation. The only way to erase assumptions about yourself is to tell people what you need rather than let them act out what they think you may need.

5. Develop a support network Find people that have high expectations..family, friends…teachers Your success will be limited if you gather around those with low expectations. 6. WORK HARD—Persevere. Be Flexible -Know and value yourself ACTION is required to make your goals and dreams come true - Take control of your own life! Sometimes you have to accept the fact that you may have to work harder than others to get the same desired outcome.

7. Be P PP Proactive…not r rr reactive. Take control of your environment…your attitude…your life. How many of you have heard this? “I’m in a bad mood because…(raining, yelled at by someone..bad day…the world is against me). Why..???????? You are in control of YOU!
