Prepositional Phrases A phrase is a group of words that functions as a single part of speech. Phrases DO NOT contain a subject and a verb. Contains: a preposition AND a noun/pronoun – The noun/pronoun is the object of the preposition – The book is between the pen and the pencil. May act as an adjective – Modifies a noun by telling what kind? which one? – Usually comes after the noun – The car with four doors broke down on the highway. May act as an adverb – Modifies a verb, an adjective or an adverb by showing where? when? in what way? to what extent? – Before class, you must put your homework on the desk.
