1.1 Understanding our Environment Environmental Science 1.1 Mrs. Trimble Mrs. Perryman

Elbow Partner- In your notebook set up a T-chart and compare Environmental Science  2 Ways they are similar  2 Ways they are different Ecology  2 ways they are similar  2 ways they are different

Ecology The study of how living things interact with each other and with their non-living environments.

Biotic- “bio= life…..living and once living components of an ecosystem Abiotic- “a”= not/without….non-living components of an ecosystem

Environment The surroundings of an organism that affect its life and development.

Environmental Science Study of how humans interact with the environment (positive or negative)

Elbow Partner- record your answers into your notes  What is a Renewable Resource?  What is a Non-renewable Renewable?  Are natural resources Biotic or Abiotic?

Natural Resource Any natural substance that living things use

Two categories of natural resources  Renewable Resources- abundant natural resources that are continually produced  Non-renewable Resources- resources that can be used up faster than they can be replenished naturally

Renewable or Non-renewable? Sunlight? Timber?

Renewable or Non-renewable Water? Minerals?

Renewable or Non-renewable? XXX Notice the environmental plate? Materials to make the car? Materials to keep the car running?

What are the main environmental problems?  H abitat Loss/ Destruction  I nvasive Species  P opulation  P ollution  O ver-Consumption

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS ARE GLOBAL It’s a small world after all?

Biosphere Thin Layer of life around the Earth

Developed Vs Developing Countries Highly Industrialized with citizens earning high incomes Little to no industrialization with Citizens earning low incomes

The Difference  Developed Nations –United States, England, Italy, France, Canada –Lower population, consume a lot of resources  Developing Countries –India, Kenya, Nigeria, Mexico –High population, consume resources but not at the rate or in the amount of developed Nations

Population Crisis VS. Over- consumption Crisis

Consumption Rates  In terms of natural resource consumption there are two issues: –Population- too many people –Consumption- use too many resources Both of these are critical issues to solve and we will explore this more as the year progresses.

Sustainability Action, system or process that can be maintained indefinitely.

You mow your lawn twice a week with a gas mower. You gather the Clippings and leaves together to use as mulch and fertilizer for your Garden. You found a grocery store with a wide variety of organic food shipped from all over the country. You drive there at least three times a week to go shopping. You have installed a low flow faucet, toilet and shower head in your bathroom. Each morning you take a thirty minute shower and leave the water running When you brush your teeth. Elbow Partners: Discuss the following and decide if each action is sustainable or non- sustainable
