History Project idea Creation at Finpro Japan, early > Finpro, The Finnish side project manager saw the changing needs of the aging population in Japan as a potential market for Finnish wellbeing sector products and services and took the initiative to establish a Finnish Wellbeing Center Project. Finpro is an association founded by Finnish companies and affiliated by Finnish government. 15

17 Finnish Wellbeing Center Project, goals City of Sendai, Japan had a plan to build a Wellbeing Center, specializing in the needs of the ageing population, with help of foreign companies and elderly care experts. Finland became the partner through Finnish Wellbeing Center Project. Goal was to design a comprehensive well-being center, which represents Finnish architectural design and Finnish health care and well-being services but is compatible with the Japanese culture. The center’s operations provide the latest nursing technologies both in the center and at home. Apart from the Care Unit the project also included plans for a Research and Development Unit that will enable fruitful co- operation between Finnish and Japanese researchers and companies engaged in activities related to welfare of older people.

25 Results Implementation of a bilateral development project for elderly. The project provides a venue for research on new methods of elderly care that reflect Finland’s and Japan’s skills and experience in the field. Finnish Wellbeing Center (FWBC) project has unique features that may enable it to serve as a model for cross- border cooperation in the Japanese welfare sector. Cooperation among private companies, universities and local governments in Finland and Japan. A long- term cooperation agreement was signed with the City of Sendai. Possibility to distribute the Finnish Elderly Care concept also in other markets.
