 “Indentify “Best Time” for studying: Everyone has higher and low periods of attention and concentration. Are you a “morning person” or a “night person”. Use your power times to study; use the down times for routines such as laundry and errands.”  “Make room for entertainment and relaxation: College is more than studying. You need to have a social life yet, you need to have a balance in your life.”  Mind tools.com

 “Time management has been in existence for more then 100 years.”  Analyzing time has been around since the Ancient Greeks  Part of Social Engineering  Social Engineering  “Change stress-producing factors in the environment”  “Changing the entire stress-producing environment”

 Time is all around us  With the increase in technology, we are more rushed  Attempt to be more efficient by grouping time

 “The prioritization, scheduling and execution of daily responsibilities to a level of personal satisfaction.”(Seaward, 314).  A coping technique is used to:  Change Stress producing factors in the environment  Change the entire stress producing environment  Choosing the path of least resistance

 Several factors play a role in stopping people from having good time management skills.  Attention  Manipulation or control over situations  Avoiding the task at hand  Rationalization

 Time is adjustable  Illusion that there will always be more time in the day.  People believe that time management techniques just don’t work.  That organizing yourself is boring.

 “Time management is actually self management. Its interesting that the skills we need to manage others are the same skills we need to manage ourselves: the ability to plan, delegate, organize, direct and control.”  When a student works well with time management they will work to their peak performance!

 Type A personality  Workaholics  Time Jugglers  Procrastinators  Perfectionist  Lifestyle Trap Personalities

 Type A personality people tend to not take matters in a urgency basis. They over look importance.  Don’t know how to separate time urgent matters with non urgent matters  They may seemed organized but their thoughts are usually scattered

 “Workaholism is considered a process addiction wherein self-validation is received from prolonged working hours to maintain a sense of importance or self-esteem” (Seaward, 316).  These people tend to complain about the long hours even though they need the long hours to validate themselves.

 “A time juggler is a person who tries to do more than one thing at a time” (Seaward, 317).  These people tend to take on more tasks then one can physically and mentally handle.  They also schedule themselves to be in two places at once.  Since they juggle their time and appointments, less tends to get done then originally planned.

 “Procrastination is a diversion tactic. Procrastinators avoid responsibilities and put off till tomorrow what should have been done today” (Seaward, 317).  Three characteristics that tend to come with procrastination are laziness/apathy, fear of failure, and a need for instant gratification.

 Straightforward procrastinator  Deceptive procrastinator  Time-trap procrastinator

 “A perfectionist is someone who is obsessed with carrying out every task and responsibility to perfection” (Seaward, 317).  Tend to not see the whole picture or the task as a whole.  The whole project is compromised because the perfectionist focuses on one aspect and completes that one part absolutely perfectly.

 These people can’t say no.  “they receive validation of their self-worth by helping people, often at the expense of their own needs” (Seaward, 317).  These people tend to take on basic tasks like helping friends out or feeding an animal because they can not say no.  They also feel taken advantage of after they do the good deed because they are not thanked properly in their mind.

 How many of you feel that you do not use your time effectively? Do you feel there isn’t enough time in the day?

 Three categories can help someone get their life back on track and have good time management skills.  Prioritization  Scheduling  Execution

 “Prioritization means ranking responsibilities and tasks in their order of importance” (Seaward, 318).  ABC Rank Order  Important vs. Urgent Method  Pareto Principal

 A for highest priority  B for second priority  C for third priority

 Putting work into sections or boxes and work your way down the set in order of importance.

 Focus on one or two specific tasks that are of high importance

 “Scheduling is time allocation for prioritized responsibilities, or the skill of matching a specific task or responsibility with a designated time period in which to accomplish it” (Seaward, 320).  Boxing  Time Mapping

 “The execution of responsibilities is a systematic progression of steps taken toward the satisfactory completion of each task” (Seaward, 320).  Assign a deadline for each goal  Break large projects down into sections  Work on one task/section at a time  Reward yourself for completion of each task systematically.

 Whole point of TM is to decrease stress level via effective management of time  A-B Design  Personal Thoughts  Check List

 90 mixed gender  Time management questionnaire  Short Range Planning Students  Time Attitudes  Long Range Planning Students  High correlation between feeling control of time management attitudes and skills and high G.P.A

 Delegate other people to help you with the work.  Schedule interruptions  Schedule personal time every day  Journal  Edit your life  Network skills  Organization skills
