Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Week 4! Please remember to sign in. Introduce yourself to one or more of the SVU students and discuss the following question: “Why are you passionate about social justice?”

Objectives Participants will: ●hear directly from students about how teachers can reach ALL students. ●gain a deeper understanding of the themes in Ladson- Billings’s chapter through small and large group discussion. ●learn the difference between multicultural and anti-racist education. ●determine one way in which they can be more culturally responsive in their classrooms.

Community Agreements 1.Stay engaged 2.Speak your truth 3.Listen for understanding 4.Experience discomfort 5.Expect and accept non-closure 6.Maintain confidentiality 7.Withhold judgment (no blame, no shame, no guilt)

Student Voice Union (SVU) Guests

Ladson-Billings Article: Social Context “Teachers who believe that society is fair and just believe that their students are participating on a level playing field and simply have to learn to be better competitors than other students.”

Ladson-Billings Article: Social Context “Teachers who I term culturally relevant assume that an asymmetrical (even antagonistic) relationship exists between poor students of color and society. Thus, their vision of their work is one of preparing students to combat inequity by being highly competent and critically conscious.”

Ladson-Billings Article: Social Context Refer to questions on handout under “social context.” Discuss them with your small group (2 minutes/person). Large group share-out.

Ladson-Billings Article: Remaining Sections Refer to questions in your small group’s assigned section. Discuss them with your small group (2 minutes/person). Large group share-out.

Multicultural vs. Anti-Racist Education Half of the table reads about multicultural education and half reads about anti-racist education. What is the difference? Which occurs most in your school/classroom? How does one achieve balance?

Reflection: Quick Write (5 minutes) Given what you have learned about culturally relevant pedagogy, what can you do in your classroom TOMORROW (short-term)? What can you do in your classroom over the long-term?

Your Needs As you continue on your journey to being a more culturally relevant practitioner: ●How will you keep educating and re- educating yourself? ●What questions are plaguing you? ●What do you need for support? ●How can we stay connected with one another?

THANK YOU “The question is not how we do it, but rather, how can we not do it?” -Gloria Ladson-Billings Together, we can do it. Last meeting: Thursday, March 5, 4:30 pm, DAC
