Timeline for GCSE changes Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. September 2012: First teaching of new two-year linear GCSE courses November 2012: GCSE units available as in November 2011 January 2013: GCSE units available as in January 2012 External assessments for English literature, geography, history and religious studies will include additional marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar March 2013: GCSE units available as in March 2012 June 2013: GCSE units available as in June 2012 Final exam series with modular assessment. Key opinion leaders - March 2012

Timeline for GCSE changes Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. September 2013: First teaching of (slightly) revised English Literature and History (to deal with breadth and depth concerns) November 2013: GCSE units available in English, English language and mathematics but only to those certificating in this series. No other subjects available. January 2014: Series no longer used for GCSE examinations. June 2014: GCSEs available as linear qualifications only. November 2014: GCSEs in English, English language and mathematics available as linear qualifications only, no other subjects available. June 2015: GCSEs available as linear qualifications only. September 2015: First teaching of new GCSEs (2 year courses?) Key opinion leaders - March 2012

“Modular to linear” – What does it mean? Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. From June 2014, all assessment will have to be taken in a single series Students should usually take this assessment at the end of the course Taking all the exams at the end of the course does not necessarily mean using the linear specification The end of the course might not be at the end of KS4

AQA’s Linear Specification Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. Currently has a January entry which will not be allowed beyond January This will become a November entry. Distinct from other linear qualifications because 60% is calculator assessment

Changes to the specification Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. Until the outcome of the National Curriculum review, all changes relate to assessment regulations – the mathematical content doesn’t change. The definition of “end of course” still needs to be clarified. DfE aims are to reduce needless early entry, which AQA supports. However, some students are able to complete GCSEs early and move on to further study.

How will performance tables change? These changes will affect performance tables from 2014 onwards From 2014, no qualification can be counted as more than one qualification in the headline measures of performance. Dual award GCSEs such as GCSE Science will continue to count as two separate qualifications. Only existing full course GCSEs, established iGCSEs and AS levels will automatically count. Performance tables Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved.

What are the criteria for qualifications to be included in the headline measures? They must be at least equivalent in size to a GCSE (120 guided learning hours) They must use a grading system (i.e. cannot be pass/fail only) They must include both synoptic and external assessment They must lead to progression to study at a higher level in the same field or more broadly They must have a proven track record although new qualifications may be able to demonstrate this at a later date Content covered must be appropriate The response makes clear that schools may offer qualifications that do not meet the above criteria and that performance in all qualifications will be reported. However, qualifications that do not meet the above criteria cannot be counted in headline measures. Performance tables Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved.

Influence of the EBacc? Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. Research published last year showed the impact the EBacc is having on future GCSE choices. Since its introduction, 47 per cent of pupils taking GCSEs in 2013 are now studying a combination of EBacc subjects – English, maths, a language, history or geography, and two sciences. In 2011, 22 per cent of pupils were entered for the EBacc in state-funded schools. Schools are not entering as many boys as girls for the EBacc. In 2011, almost one in four girls (23.9 per cent) were entered for the EBacc subjects, compared to under one in five boys (19.4 per cent). Key opinion leaders - March 2012

National Curriculum Review Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. Interim report Dec 2011: tionDetail/Page1/DFE −Core, Foundation and Basic subjects −More breadth at KS4, reclassify D&T, Citizenship and ICT to ‘basic’ curriculum −Revised approach to Programmes of Study (what should be taught) and attainment targets (the standard expected) −Ambition to have greater clarity (influenced by Hirsh & Massachusetts), remove level descriptors −Possible changes to length of KS3 and KS4 Key opinion leaders - March 2012

Future GCSE reform and mathematics (slide taken from DfE) Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. Addressing broad employer concerns on the levels of literacy and numeracy attained by students who have completed GCSE. Employers to have faith that students who have achieved a good grade at GCSE maths are indeed numerate and are ready to use these skills effectively. Secretary of State thinks we should set new goal so that the majority of students are studying mathematics to 18 within a decade. Learning from the GCSE linked pair as a key part of future reform of GCSE mathematics.

A level changes – coming soon Version 2.0 Copyright © AQA and its licensors. All rights reserved. Complete review of A level content and assessment? Putting universities in charge of A level re-development? Having one awarding body or one university responsible for each subject? Abolishing re-sits? Abandoning January sessions? Future of AS levels? Linear A levels? For first teaching in Sept 2014? Key opinion leaders - March 2012
