Chapter 11 Supplementary Information

Missing Study Guide Info  Salmoneus was the son of Sisyphus. He claimed to be equal to Zeus and even ordered sacrifices to himself. Zeus killed him with his lightening bolt.

Tantalus and Dione’s Children  Niobe – Apollo and Artemis killed all of her 12 children after she bragged that she was better than their mother, Leto, because Leto only had 2 children. In addition, Niobe was turned to stone.  Broteas – He was burned as a sacrifice on a pyre, because he was a hunterwho refused to honor Artemis.  Pelops – Tantalus killed and served his son at a banquet to the gods in order to test the gods’omniscience (their ability to know all, see all). Luckily, they figured it out in time, except for Demeter who accidentally ate his shoulder, because she was in so much grief over Persephone that she didn’t notice. After Zeus killed Tantalus for his crime, he restored Pelops to life and Demeter gave him an ivory shoulder to make up for the one she had eaten.

Other Stuff to Know Ways to Appease the souls of the dead  Bury the person’s most valued possessions with him  Respect given through songs of mourning and eulogies  wearing of dark, gloomy clothes and appearing sad without the loved one  burying the remains in a special house that resembles their house while living (a tomb)  sexual companionship (killing of slaves over the tombs of the dead)

Terms to know  Eidolon: the soul/image/shade of the dead person  psychopompos: soul guide (Hermes was the psychopompos for most eidolons.)
