Quick Review  What three things must be found on a map?  Compass Rose  Key (Legend)  Scale

Types of Graphs  For our purposes, we are only going to deal with 5 major types of graphs.  Bar Graph  Circle Graph (Pie Chart)  Line Graph  Pictographs  Population Pyramids

Things We Need  Before we can begin to make a graph, there are certain things we need.  First, we need to collect our data.  Second, all graphs need a title.  Third, we must make sure to label certain elements for each graph.

Bar Graph  For this graph, we will be dealing with the Lowery Freshman Center’s favorite types of movies. Move Type # of Students Comedy632 Action379 Drama322 Horror291 Classics125

Bar Graph

Circle Graph  For this graph, we will examine the land area that each continent has. Land Area Percentage of Land N. America 16.2 S. America 11.8 Europe7 Asia29.5 Africa20.2 Australia5.1 Antarctica9.5 Other0.7

Circle Graph

Line Graph  For our line graph, we will learn to not only graph, but to compare data. We will look at the number of students that have passed Algebra 1 for different teachers. Teacher Name Mr. Davis Mrs. Smith Ms. Flowers

Line Graph

Pictograph  A pictograph is similar to a bar graph. The difference is that we use a symbol to represent the object being graphed. Each symbol would stand for a certain number of items being graphed.  For example, if we were graphing population, we might use people.

Pictograph  If we were doing movies, we might use a movie reel.  If we were doing the number of students with computers, we might use computers.

Population Pyramid  Sometimes we will want to look at the population breakdown for a region.  To do this, we will often use a population pyramid.  Population pyramids allow us to see gender and age.

Class Work-Homework  Using the data provided, create 2 graphs, one for the Republican and one for the Democrat. You may create a bar graph, circle graph or pictograph. Graphs need to be neat and colorful. A.Use the other set of data to create 2 more graphs. Write 10 questions that can be answered using at least one of the four graphs.
