ArcGIS 9.2 Tutorials Summarizing Data, Creating graphs, & Adding Graphs to Layouts Created by Crystall Lippincott & Layne Curtis

Summarizing Data Summarizing Data is one of the most basic and important tools in using ArcGIS and ArcMap. Begin by opening up ArcGIS and either opening an attribute table from a layer by right-clicking, or adding a data table and then opening the table.

Right-click on a statistic tab and select Summarize.

Click either Yes or No when this dialog box opens.

There!! Once you click yes or no in the dialog box that opened up, summarizing is complete. Just check to make sure you have the summarize output table saved and continue. You can add the Summarized table anytime you want.

Creating Graphs Graphing is also an important tool, if not more important that knowing how to summarize data. To start, go up to the Tools menu and highlight Graphs. Then in the side menu, select Create.

After clicking Create in the Tools menu, the create graph wizard [pictured above] will appear.

Select the Graph type you want and the layer you want to use for the graph

This is what the Graph Wizard looks like when near completion.

The second part to creating a graph, though this is also near completion.

When you have completed and have decided what you will use in the graph and what it looks like, click Finish. You will be prompted to save; do so by selecting a place to put your graph and then click okay. The graph will appear in the data view.

Adding Graphs to Layouts Adding a graph to a layout is fairly simple and doesn’t take much time at all. To start, first switch the view to layout view using the view menu bar at the top of the page.

After the view is in layout view, go into the Graphs menu under the Tools menu and select Manage. A Graph Manager window will appear, looking something like the one to the right.

In the graph manager will appear all your graphs created for your specific project, though you can add others as well. Right-click on the name of the graph you want to add and select add to layout. The graph will appear and you’ll be set. All you’ll have to do from there is resize and maneuver the graph around as you see fit.
