Teachers’ notes This activity could be used for introducing a number of CS ideas: 1)Abstraction: Before introducing these cards, can the children draw or verbalise a simplified ‘day in their life’? 2)Sequences: Can the children sequence the events? 1)Decomposition: Can the children break each stage of their day into smaller parts than those shown? 2)Repetition: Can the children create an algorithm to save repeating the full sequence five times for each day of the week. 3)Conditionals: IF it’s 3:15pm, THEN... 4)Operators: IF it’s Saturday OR Sunday THEN... 5)Debugging: If a friend can’t make sense of your algorithm, you need to work out where the problem lies and fix it

Teachers’ notes Differentiation 1)When looking at the stages in more detail, ask the less able computer scientists* to work in pairs to create subroutines for brushing teeth, for example. 2)More able computer scientists* could look at each part of their day in the school building. 3)Jigsaw all the algorithms together at the end, so everyone feels some ownership of the process 4)Gifted and Talented computer scientists* could explore conditional and operators Progression to programming Consider using the excellent ‘Printable Scratch Blocks’ found at * I use this term because a learner’s challenge should be determined by their KSU in Computing and not their attainment in English or Maths.
