Analyzing the Modules Within Grade Levels: Effective Vocabulary Practices Lesson Jigsaw November 2012 Common Core Ambassadors

Vocabulary Practices Within and Across Lessons “`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.” Passage? Author? Even invented words create a mood and impression that carries meaning for a listener or reader. Think about how creating and decoding invented words can support vocabulary learning. 2

Word Play is Good for You! Try This! (10 min) At your tables, write down a word or two that captures something important you learned in your research earlier this morning. Share your word(s) with others at your table. Combine your word with one other person’s to form a new word. Circulate and find a partner. Share your new words and the meaning they convey. Share out and discuss. How might this support vocabulary learning? 3

Learning Targets I can locate key sections, practices and resources at the module, unit and lesson level. I can analyze effective instructional strategies that build students’ vocabulary. Form groups of 3 (triads) for Module 2, Units 1 and 2 lesson jigsaw 4

Jigsaw of Lessons: Units 1 and 2 Begin with Unit 1 Jigsaw (40 min) Divide all the lessons in Unit 1 evenly. (5 min) Use the Module Vocabulary Analysis Notecatcher (p.___) to capture your findings as you read through the lessons. Analyze individual lesson strategies and the arch of vocabulary work in a series of lessons. (15 min) Each group member has 5 minutes to share findings (15 min) Open discussion in triads (5 min) Unit 2 Jigsaw: Repeat Unit 1 process (40 min) 5

Synthesis Headlines Develop a news HEADLINE that captures synthesis from your group. (5 min) Include How vocabulary is addressed at lesson level and over multiple lessons How this addresses research around effective vocabulary instruction. 6

Reflection and Progress Tracking Where are you now towards our targets? I can locate key sections, practices and resources at the module, unit and lesson level. I can analyze effective instructional strategies that build students’ vocabulary. 7
