FacilitatingGroups  Listening and responding  Guiding  Attending to content and process  Being in service to the group  Creating conditions that bring out the best in people

Modeling appropriate communication skills: listening; repeating and summarizing Ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for all learners Helping learners apply content to their jobs Providing complete feedback during discussions and activities Managing group involvement processes Promoting the development of action plans

 Facilitating while a member of a group is probably the most common use of facilitation skills  You can ask questions that will redirect the group or invite in a quiet member

 Divide into groups of 4  In each home group designate a 1, 2, 3 & 4  Reform in expert groups ◦ 1 reads and prepares to teach before the meeting ◦ 2 reads and prepares to teach group process ◦ 3 reads and prepares to teach how to handle ◦ difficult team members ◦ 4 reads and prepares to teach culturally proficient facilitation Return to the home group and begin teaching your part of the jigsaw

 Put on your facilitator's hat, then try to finish as many of these sentence as you can. When one group member seems to do most of the talking, I might... When an individual is silent for a long period of time, I could... When someone in the team "puts down" another member, I might...  When a group seems to want to reach a decision, but appears unable to, I might... When someone comes late, I might...  When group members are excessively polite and unwilling to confront each other’s ideas, I might...

 Take some time to reflect quietly back about yourself as a facilitator  What have your learned and what do you plan to use?

How is this a metaphor for facilitation?
