Welcome Scientists! Today: 1.Please place your Draw a Scientist drawing on your table 2.Draw a Scientist Gallery Walk Walk around and look at the drawings on the tables Answer these questions: 1.What do the drawings have in common? 2.What patterns do you see? 3.What stands out – are there any drawings that are very different from others?

New images to consider… Watch the video clips that follow this slide Record some basic facts – Where – What branch of science – Personality traits (as far as you can tell) – Age? – Tools and gear used – Other observations

File Folder Note-taking TOPIC: Science

Now: Skim the article (not scanning) And write a question or prediction ON THE FOLD TOPIC: Science FOLD 1.Above the fold: Before you read A.What is science? B.What do you know about the topic? C.How is science practiced? D.What are the limits of science? E.How do scientists think? What does it mean to think like a scientist? 2.Below the fold A.Use bullet points to list the key ideas B.Each bullet should be only 2-4 words Question or prediction about article Now read the article silently

Article Groups Check each others notes – do you have the same things? Make changes as needed

Table groups Each person share the key points from your article

Correct Safety Quiz 1.This is a fire extinguisher. The teacher would use it to put out a fire. 2.These are safety glasses/goggles. Students and teachers should wear them during science labs when necessary to protect eyes. 3.(oops) 4.False! You should ask teammates first before you ask the teacher

5.True 6.False! – You should notify the teacher and she will clean it up. 7.False – Eating and drinking during labs is not allowed. 8.False – only mix chemicals as instructed to do so by the teacher. 9.True 10. True 11. True 12. False – If you spill chemicals, notify the teacher immediately.

Safety blanket, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, goggles, etc. 19.They will be sent to the office, given a referral and not allowed back in class until there has been a meeting with their parents.

Homework: Draw a Scientist Part 2 Think about what you have seen and read today. – How are the scientists different from what you imagined and drew? – How is science different from what you showed in your drawing? Create a new drawing of a scientist – Use this drawing to show how your image of science and scientists has changed DUE FRIDAY

What is Science? Jigsaw reading Topic: Science 1.Above the fold: Before you read A.What is science? B.What do you know about the topic? C.How is science practiced? D.What are the limits of science? E.How do scientists think? What does it mean to think like a scientist?

2.Skim the article (different from scanning…) A.On the fold write a prediction about the article or a question you hope will be answered from reading the article. 3.Read the article silently 4.Below the fold A.Use bullet points to list the key ideas B.Each bullet should be only 2-3 words
