Frankenstein Warm Ups Week of Feb 28 th to March 4 th

It was completely dark when I arrived in…Geneva; the gates of the town were already shut; and I was obliged to pass the night at Secheron, a village at the distance of half a league from the city. The sky was serene; and, as I was unable to rest, I resolved to visit the spot where my poor William had been murdered. …I saw the lightning playing on the summit of Mont Blanc in the most beautiful figures. The storm appeared to approach rapidly, and, on landing, I ascended a low hill, that I might observe its progress. It advanced; the heavens were clouded, and I soon felt the rain coming slowly in large drops, but its violence quickly increased. --Summarize the passage. --What does the gates of Geneva being closed symbolize? --What role does the nature play in the mood of the passage?

My own agitation and anguish was extreme during the whole trial. I believed in her innocence; I knew it. Could the demon, who had (I did not for a minute doubt) murdered my brother, also in his hellish sport have betrayed the innocent to death and ignominy (dishonor)? I could not sustain the horror of my situation; and when I perceived that the popular voice, and the countenances of the judges, had already condemned my unhappy victim, I rushed out of the court in agony. --Summarize the passage. --What does running out of the trial say about Victor’s character? --In your opinion, why does Victor not speak up to defend Justine?

Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed. Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably (forever) excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous." --Summarize the passage --Who is the Creature comparing himself to and why? --Why does the Creature think that Victor is the only person who can help him?

"I had admired the perfect forms of my cottagers— their grace, beauty, and delicate complexions; but how was I terrified when I viewed myself in a transparent pool! At first I started back, unable to believe that it was indeed I who was reflected in the mirror; and when I became fully convinced that I was in reality the monster that I am, I was filled with the bitterest sensations of despondence (depression) and mortification (humiliation). Alas! I did not yet entirely know the fatal effects of this miserable deformity. --Summarize the passage --Describe the Creature’s feelings when he sees his face for the first time. --Why does he think he is a monster? What prior events contribute to this thought?
